Writng in The New Republic, historian Michael Kazin draws an interesting (imho) parallel between Mitt Romney and conservative Deomcrat Grover Cleveland, best known for being the only President to serve two non-consecutive terms.

quote:

Ironically, the White House occupant who best represented the views that now dominate the American right was a Democrat: Grover Cleveland, the only Democratic president from the eve of Civil War to Woodrow Wilson in 1912. When Cleveland, a rotund New Yorker, was first elected in 1884, his party’s base was remarkably similar to that of the GOP today: white Southerners from all classes and white workers everywhere who did not belong to unions. The Democrat’s standard-bearer ALSO expressed doubt that any “sensible and responsible” woman would ever want to vote.

As President, Cleveland took several opportunities to denounce those Americans who, as Mitt Romney expressed it to his donors in Boca Raton, expected the government to provide them with the necessities of life. In 1887, he vetoed a bill that earmarked $10,000 to buy seed for drought-stricken farmers in Texas. “I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution,” Cleveland explained in his veto message, “I do not believe that the power and duty of the General Government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit.” He then added a pithy note of pedagogy: “The lesson should be constantly enforced that though the people support the government, the government should not support the people.”

If that were true I could vote for him. Unfortunately I think Kazin is quite mistaken as to Romney.

I had a whole slew of thoughts about remembrances of Cleveland in sophomore history... but then I looked at wiki to make sure I was right about several items. And they summed it up in an economy of words I maybe wouldn't have.
From Wiki:
Cleveland took strong positions and was heavily criticized. His intervention in the Pullman Strike of 1894 to keep the railroads moving angered labor unions nationwide and angered the party in Illinois; his support of the gold standard and opposition to Free Silver alienated the agrarian wing of the Democratic Party.[5] Furthermore, critics complained that he had little imagination and seemed overwhelmed by the nation's economic disasters—depressions and strikes—in his second term.[5] Even so, his reputation for honesty and good character survived the troubles of his second term. Biographer Allan Nevins wrote: "in Grover Cleveland the greatness lies in typical rather than unusual qualities. He had no endowments that thousands of men do not have. He possessed honesty, courage, firmness, independence, and common sense. But he possessed them to a degree other men do not."[6]

The "pretty good guy" that took the country with him to the bottom.  I wonder what the "percentage" of Americansa he wouldn't represent was?

Grover fathered a bastard child when he was in Buffalo. You don't suppose that Mitt has ever been in Buffalo and ..... nahhhh, guess not.

Not only would that not surprise me at all but I want to know...was it between administrations ?

Those Texas farmers today no doubt good ole American republican farmers, would be showered in seeds from good ole Mitt...ya'know, being a good small govt., fiscal conservative n'all.

Farm subsidies have near and dear to the repub political (thus taxpayer) heart ever since a whole host of they themselves...jumped on that bandwagon. It's a real cash cow from Uncle Sam. (I have had lawyers tell me to buy some land...get a check)

Cleveland's intervention in the Pullman Strike was likely the modern confirmation that govt. exists to first serve the capital or investor class and certainly...not the working class.

A It was when he was Governor of New York.

B He broke up the Pullman strike because it halted mail shipments, much like T Rooseveltdbreaking up the coal strike because it cut off everyones heat in the winter.

And government should never intervene ON BEHALF of the worker. There are three ways to end a labor dispute, break labor, order business to settle, or order both to compromise.
