Comet watch! A new comet has been discovered that is predicted to blaze incredibly brilliantly in the skies during late 2013. With a perihelion passage of less than two million kilometres from the Sun on 28 November 2013, current predictions are of an object that will dazzle the eye at up to magnitude —16. That's far brighter than the full Moon. If predictions hold true then C/2012 S1 will certainly be one of the greatest comets in human history, far outshining the memorable Comet Hale-Bopp of 1997 and very likely to outdo the long-awaited Comet Pan-STARRS (C/2011 L4) which is set to stun in March 2013. http://astronomynow.com/news/n1209/25comet/ http://www.livescience.com/23579-newfound-comet-dazzling-2013-display-c2012s1.html Yes, 2 comets next year!

Thanks for the links! I wonder what the chances are of getting close with an unmanned probe? (Though it's probably going to play hell with the long freeway drive we do on Thanksgiving)

Thank you!!! This is great to anticipate. I really like this phrase from the first link. "Kohoutek it is certain to be spectacular, quite possibly a once-in-a-civilization's-lifetime event." Not a person's lifetime, a civilization's. Things like this are very helpful for keeping life's events in perspective. Thanks again, Outlier

Chances are about zero ha. I thought about that soon as I read the link, I'm sure the actual logistics are doable but the money and politics would be the major challenge... NASA's budget has been kicked repeatedly in the groin... Every interesting program they have had has been cut, I could make a list but it's to depressing. We should have been imaging planets around near by stars by now ffs... -Aries

oooooooo that will be cool. when Hale-Bopp past us in 97' it was right outside my kitchen door in the sky. it was great going down the yard and seeing it there. thanks for the info needles
