I met my play partner on Alt.com and my sub right here on CM. Both times, they wrote to me first and we hit it right off. I've met lots of nice people at munches too though.

I'm not suggesting that you wear your kinks completely on your sleeve, or talk about them with anyone and everyone. But if there's someone who's caught your interest, you can always judge their reactions to teasing comments (my personal favourite is "Don't make me bite/spank you").
