DarkSteven -> A theory on why Romney is not a good candidate. (10/3/2012 5:44:57 AM)

Because nobody sane would want to campaign for President.

I guess that means that Obama also isn't sane.

I agree. The guy KNOWS what the Presidency is like after four years of it and he still wants more.

IMO, he has aged more physically than any other President has over a first term.

I can't imagine the stress of being a president with a split congress. Nothing gets done and people blame the president. When reminded a split congress is to blame, nobody listens. If he issues executive orders, he's accused of being a dictator.

DFB, It wasn't a split congress for the first two years. The dems had control of everything. Still nothing got done except Obamacare.

Lucylastic -> RE: A theory on why Romney is not a good candidate. (10/3/2012 9:18:51 AM)

thats why there were 137 Rep minority filbusters, in the 111th Congress, 2009-2011, and have been 87 in the latest congress.
or did you forget those?

And the stimulus
And the college loan overhaul
And the consumer finance law
And the new CAFE standards
Etc.

I would say this is true for politics in general. The best people out there do not choose politics for their careers.

Was it always this way? Probably not. It is probably less appealing as a profession today than, say, a hundred years ago.

I suppose the question is why is it no longer a compelling career choice for bright, young people, and is there anything within our control as a society to make it more appealing?

At the end of the day, we will only get good candidates if the system is set up to allow for that.

I have some thoughts on the why it isn't appealing - one is that there is no privacy for politicians anymore with respects to their private/home lives. What person would want to put, not just themselves, but their entire immediate, and in some cases extended, family through the public scrutiny involved. No one of any intelligence would want to run a business, be a doctor, an educator, etc. if you, and your family, were constantly hounded by the media. I'm sure there are other reasons, too...

Of course they did, cause it makes them look bad, they hate facts...

In Upstairs at the White House, former chief usher (the guy who runs the place) J.B. West noted that nobody ever really wanted to leave.

Lincoln aged a lot too, I think. Not surprisingly.

And we need to ask whether we now have an electoral process so vacuous, vicious and just plain silly that most people in their right minds wouldn’t go anywhere near it.

How could anybody ask such silly question? There are thousands eligible and willing. The US is occupied country, only a certain circle of people get close to real power.  It is still not clear how Obama got where he is. We will learn the truth some day. He is from the family with strong CIA background, how did his ties with financial elite develop we do not know yet.
