I also took ambien a couple of times - very scary! I never did anything weird (well not to my knowledge!) but would have insanely vivid & bizarre dreams.. lots of abstract colours, shapes, noises... and I'd wake up angry. Real angry.

Another thing maybe worth trying is acupuncture.

descrite -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/4/2012 12:26:25 AM)

Oh, yeah...yeah, the dreams. Not a constant, but pretty often. Vivid-to-real. Yeah. Can be creepy.

littlewonder -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/4/2012 1:11:36 AM)

That's something. I never had dreams on ambien...none that I remember at least. I don't dream without ambien either though. But the entire time I was on Ambien....complete blackout. I only know what people told me I did while on it. Otherwise I have no remembrance at all from then.

OsideGirl -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/4/2012 8:52:06 AM)

Yeah, my brother took an Ambien. Woke up the next morning at work. Luckily, he made it through LA rush hour traffic without causing an accident. Scared the crap out of him....and everyone else.

Melotonin is pretty much a hoax. Used in combination with those other chems, though, it rocks.

If melatonin was a hoax, why was Ramelteon (Rozerem) created and patented?

I've been using sublingual melatonin for years. Sublingual works best for me: http://www.iherb.com/Source-Naturals-Melatonin-Orange-Flavored-Sublingual-1-mg-100-Tablets/24650

That's $4.76 for 100 pills. My brother just got a script for Ramelteon which retails for @ $190. (He's disabled, so it only costs him $1.)

Phoenixpower -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/4/2012 3:42:20 PM)

well, for me 25mg amitiptylin does the trick [:)] though I only get that via prescription [:)]

hausboy -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/4/2012 8:14:17 PM)

Hey Kali

here's the "short" answer.....
According to the FDA, herbal supplements are not considered medications or drugs--they fall into the "food" category. That means that the FDA has cleared them as safe for human consumption, but it does NOT mean that have medicinal value. (I'm not saying they don't have benefits--I'm just saying that they do not have to conduct scientific, medically validated laboratory evidence to prove it. Medications/drugs.....do.)

FDA is started to crack down on herbal supplements that claim to cure medical problems (this is against federal guidelines). So in other words, you can claim your supplement promotes sleep, but you can't say it cures insomnia.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/4/2012 8:57:32 PM)

I like Ambien, but I have to be careful how I use it. For instance: computer off before swallowing it. I too woke up to find an interesting chat conversation with my boy. Quite a lot of gobbledy-gook on the screen from my end. That incident was funny.

Another incident was definitely not funny. When Cabin Boy and I finally landed in the anchorage after a grueling 10+ hour slog north in ridiculous conditions, I made sure the hook was down tight, put him on watch, took an Ambien and went to bed. When he brought my coffee in the morning, he told me I'd climbed up the companionway in the middle of the night to crawl out on the end of the 6' bowsprit. Apparently I told him I was going to pee. He yanked me back, took me below to the head, sat me on the toilet, wiped me, and put me back to bed. I didn't remember a single thing.

Sometimes doing a supported side-twist (yoga) in bed starting on the right side and finishing on the left will be enough to get me to sleep if I'm having a hard night. Spinal twists are calming. Even if it doesn't work at least I'm getting another twist in for the day.

Sorry, forgot to use the sarcasm font. And I should have added "by a pharmaceutical company."

Anyway, as long as I am using the sublingual type, unpatented melatonin works great for me and it is under $5 for 100 vs $190 for 30 for the patented type.

And no side effects the next morning.

Oh, don't give me that. I know better. You can't tell me there are no side effects. Not when an innocent melotonin user takes a trifling amount in a hotel room in Boston, but then wakes up at midday the following Wednesday, locked in a Bangkok meat cooler, stuffed to the gills with candied yams in all orifices, and a note tattooed on the forearm which reads, "Here lies Chester A. Arthur, for crimes unknown and unknowable."

No, ma'am. Don't tell ME about the absence of side effects. I ain't buying that pony show again.

kalikshama -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/5/2012 7:22:39 PM)

Holy shit! What brand was that? I need some excitement! [:D]

ToyOfRhamnusia -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/5/2012 10:47:34 PM)

Red wine, folks - it works. I contains natural melatonin and other chemicals that could have been patented as "drugs" were it not because they occur naturally.

Besides, if it is approved by the FDA, you can be certain it has unpleasant side effects and that some pharma corporation makes big money on that endorsement. If it contains a disclaimer on the label to the effect of "not intended to cure or prevent any disease" and/or "not evaluated by the FDA", you can be pretty sure that it is a pretty potent natural remedy that WORKS more often than not if you can find other evidence (= "online rumors" or recommendations from someone who has tried it) it favor of it.

littlewonder -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/5/2012 11:02:48 PM)

Red wine just gives me a major migraine. Does nothing to help me sleep. Now give me about 3 strong margaritas and I'll be passed out in no time!

Although the next morning I may not be in a very good mood and end up with another migraine anyway. [8D]

ToyOfRhamnusia -> RE: Vitamins / supplements (10/6/2012 7:20:54 PM)

There is a common weed that also gives the same result - excellent to sleep on after inhaling its smoke, after eating the extracted oil from it, or after simply making tea of it.

There is no remedy that will not cause SOME people to have issues with it. That does not make that remedy ineffective or valueless. It just makes the person who cannot use it unfortunate.
