I like contracts for a few different reasons.
Mainly, because I’m big into symbolism. Just like a wedding band, or a friendship necklace, or a collar, contracts can serve as a symbolic presentation of power exchange.
I also like them because they can contribute to communication. (contribute to, NOT replace.) Pulling out the contract every 6 months gives us some specifics to work with. How’s this going? How’s that going? How have we grown and changed?
And, lastly, they can be used as defensive evidence in court. If something goes wrong and subbie wants to file assault charges on me, bet your ass I’m going to grab up those contracts to at least attempt to use consent as a defense, or at the minimum, a mitigating circumstance. (Now, before anyone chimes in that contracts aren’t legal documents, slavery isn’t legal, blah, blah, blah…. please note that not all evidence has to be a "legal document". Journals, diaries, recorded phone calls, love letters, and tons of other communications that aren’t "legal documents" can still be used as evidentiary material in a court of law.)

Are they "a must"?
Depends on the people and the relationship.

I strongly believe contracts are a must especially at the beginning of D/s realtionship. I go through the contract agreement however you would like to call to find out what the slave has lived or experienced or can give. I always go for slave/lover so it gives me the guidelines. :)

Are BDSM contracts a must? Do you think they work? I'm for them as long as they are updated from time to time

For me, yes they are a must.

They help us remember important details, and when I have been training more than one person it helped me remember limits.

I would update them at least yearly.

However, Fox and I have our original training turned owning contract and other than a later statement of our intent to keep it and respect each other's individual needs, we haven't updated in a few years. It just feels to natural to us to keep updating things.

We basically review the contract but if its not broke, why fix it?
