sticky in introductions giving advice and
information on what's appropriate to put in
a introduction?

I think there's a bit of uncertainty from new
people and the FAQ/guidelines don't really
help much IMO, a lot of people just try to
advertise themselves.

I can't help but think, if there was another
Sticky titled something like:

"Introduction Tips & Advice." or
"Appropriate Introduction help."

Which emphasised that this was the
discussion part of the forum and not another
place to advertise.
Gave ideas on what a well recieved intro may
look like and maybe showed some commonly
made mistakes, then there would be a lot less
call for snarky replies and removed posts ect...

So how does that sound?

Status: offline 		Yeah that's the thing. It is a great idea and if people actually read it and used it to what it was then it would be very helpful. But if seemingly alot of people on here, can't read profiles or actually don't rather.

You can bring the horse to water but you can't make it drink (or something on those lines)

Status: offline 		I also think it's a great idea. Even if someone doesn't read the stickies, they will make great references when offenders are reprimanded by the mods, or guided to them by other posters.

I said in another post about moderation that the Intro guidelines hadn't been edited since 2009. Things have certainly changed since then; so should the stickies/guidelines.

People are quite inaccurate in the difference between want and need. Plus, considering that folks do not read the stickies that are already available on the site, what is one more that we'll just have to direct them to because it's obvious they haven't read it?

We go through the same thing with the Ask A Mistress FAQ. While it's great to have that as a reference, you don't get "do-overs" in Introductions unless a Mod pulls the original. In that recent case, a Mod flat out told the poster why the first one was taken down. That's direct contact via mail. Do you really think those types of folks are going to read a sticky?

Status: offline 		I agree that not many will read it, but it's a helpful thing to do to point them in the direction of it. The intro section is where we have to be welcoming and helpful if needed, give us a way to be helpful. Like kids, it's always beneficial to have a standard to reference.

If it's not used or not, it will be useful in the fact that it exists.

Plus this is a section where newbies come, give them a way to start off. If they don't use it then it's on them.

The issue is that many aren't actually introducing themselves, they're advertising.

If not advertising, then quite posibly browsing other 'product', and presenting themselves in as 'appealing' manner as they can.

Status: offline 		I said No, myself. I don't think people will stop advertising because of a sticky. I also don't think they will write better introductions with examples; I've offered a few, and seen others offer examples as well. They had no obvious impact.

There is also the potential loss of entertainment to consider.

But then, there's also the fact that we can welcome someone to the forums even if they are advertising, and let them make their own way. The flow of most of the introductions that go off the path start with an obnoxious ad, followed by snarky (and occasionally helpful or friendly) advice, which most often is ignored and degenerates into a troll feeding frenzy where it's clear the person is clueless...yet people still post refuting the clueless, in a neatly cyclic manner.

I'll offer advice but I won't argue it; people get it or they don't. (That wasn't always the case, but I've changed my outlook over time.) If we already know what the newbie needs to do to make a bad introduction turn good, what do we need to do to help them accomplish it, if we do anything at all? That's rhetorical, but answer as you like.

Status: offline 		No. It would be a waste of time. No one reads the stickies. I know I never have on this site or any other. I just always figured myself smart enough to know how to interact online just as much as offline.

The sticky won't help. The advertisements won't go away. Those type will continue to do so. I mean the scam emails everyone gets everyday in their regular email are reported in droves every single day. They've just come back even more and bigger.

And those who are idiots in intros or anywhere else will weed themselves out so everyone knows not to get involved with them. What better way to find out if you would like to meet them or not?

Status: offline 		i agree with the no voters, people never read the stickies. they rarely read the TOS either. if they want to be inappropriate, let them, it helps immediately weed out the ones who aren't worth the time and effort. they can advertise their own inadequacies better than anyone else, so let them be their own warning label. just my two cents.

being able to weed them out, I don't know...
I think when I was writing my introduction I
was at a loss for what to say, so I just read
everyones introductions to get a feel for
the standard.
I'm on the fence as to whether or not there
should be a sticky now.

Status: offline 		i'm in the 'there's no point' sector. let's face it; for those who are looking to get their end away it's too much hard work to even read important stuff like profiles to see if they are even remotely what the person is looking for. they are certainly not going to read a stickie telling them how they should post. most are so self absorbed that the thought that others won't want to instantly fuck them doesn't cross their mind.

Status: offline 		As someone who has recently joined, a sticky may have answered most of my questions, but i think i still may have asked a few things or questioned some of the given answers as everyone is different and its always nice to talk too. I think a sticky would help people familiarise themselves with what to expect, how to behave and also to act as a friendly welcome before people even post - for those that will read it, which i would have done if there was one there. It can be intimidating for some and a few regular posters really do rip away at newbies for silly little mistakes which may put some people off who just havent had the chance to find their feet yet. I received a wonderful welcome but others havent been treated as nicely for minor mistakes they could have avoided if they were prewarned.

The idiots will still come no matter what you try, but you might just help out a few of the nice ones with a few handy hints and tips.
