hehehe

As it happens, there is a historical example of improper political pressure on the BLS by a U.S. president: Republican Richard M. Nixon.

...........

According to journalistic accounts and documents, the task fell to Nixon aide Fred Malek, who first counted high-ranking Democrats at BLS using voter registration lists and then identified employees with “Jewish-sounding” names. He reported the resulting statistics to Nixon in a 1971 letter that became known as the “Jew-counting” memo, identifying 25 Democrats and 13 employees who “fit the other demographic criterion that was discussed.”

There is continued disagreement on how many targeted employees were demoted and Malek’s precise role in the affair. In 1988, Woodward and Post reporter Walter Pincus reported that two Jewish officials had been removed from their posts and shuffled off to less-important jobs at Labor during the episode. Malek — who quit his new post at the Republican National Committee on the day The Post’s story appeared — expressed regret for conducting a tally of Jews but denied a role in any demotions.

In 2007, Timothy Noah of Slate publicized a previously unreleased 1971 memo from Malek suggesting he was much more closely involved in a BLS purge then he had claimed, outlining a reorganization that resulted in the demotions of at least four high-ranking Jewish employees. The Nixon Presidential Library and Museum has also posted some, but not all, documents related to the affair on its Web site.
Nixon’s machinations at BLS caused an uproar at the time – though the anti-Jewish motive was still unknown — and led to added security measures ensuring that statistical analysis was clearly walled off from politics, according to a BLS history published in 1985. Current security policies include heavy data encryption, daily confidentiality agreements and an eight-day security lockdown for economists in advance of each monthly report.

Malek has remained a prominent adviser to Republicans from George H.W. Bush to Sarah Palin, and is co-founder with former senator Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) of the American Action Network conservative group. He is now a top fundraiser for 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Curiously enough, no one has thought to ask where all the government employees are going when the Rethugs downsize the federal government. I guess that won't be counted as unemployment either.

Politesub53 -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 3:54:40 AM)

FR.

I just found it incredible that a candidate could apologise for a gaff and then make a claim like this, against an independent body no less, in such a short space of time.

I think Mitt is stuck on the magic roundabout, and unsure where to get off.

Said Zebedee.

I find it amazing (well not really when it comes to people of the left) that people take for granted pronouncements of government. The idea that the source is an independent body is laughable. Hell, so many independent bodies in government and one would think none ever lie given the left's acceptance of this incredible news from Friday.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 5:54:29 AM)

Just shows how shitty of a politician romney is. You'd not want to say nothng about the numbers and keep pounding Obama on other things. Romney and his friends talking about it only helps Obama...Thanks Mittens!!!!!!!!

mnottertail -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 6:48:01 AM)

Cumulative change in Foodstamp and Disability v NFP

What the fuck does that even mean?   Why are foodstamps and disabled counted in the same catagory  (so every disabled vet gets foodstamps? every paraplegic who fell off a dam they were constructing, does old lady Romney get foodstamps AND disability?)

v NFP.

Natural Family Planning?

It is meaningless horseshit near as I can pencil it out.

tazzygirl -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 6:55:52 AM)

Even the military gets food stamps.

mnottertail -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 6:59:25 AM)

do they get NeuroFilardengenicPhelogics?

tazzygirl -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 7:03:18 AM)

lol... he means Non Farm Payroll

mnottertail -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 7:06:46 AM)

Still, what is a cumulative change mean in this?   What does foodstamps rising tell us against this?  If that was broken out it would show us the amount of slave wages being paid compared to the record profits of corporations.

If disability was broken out it would show us the sad shape of industrial physical harm done due to deregulation by republicans.

Now we have to guess against which is which, how much of each is in there, and I would guess it is the slave wages overwhelmingly.

tazzygirl -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 7:16:02 AM)

my guess is he has no clue what his chart means, preventing him from answering any of your questions.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 7:19:43 AM)

Comeon, give him a break. He read an article and it had that nice graph in it. He doesn't understand it or he would have talked about it....but it has nice squiggly lines.....

mnottertail -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 7:21:17 AM)

Well, clearly on December of 2007 we had no disability, foodstamps, or non-farm payroll.

That is clear, although nothing else is, and it has been accumulating ever since.  Wonder what happened that cold December back in ought and seven?

tazzygirl -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 7:41:40 AM)

Dont you love it when they give no sources?

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2012-10-05/us-foodstamp-usage-rises-new-record-high

Finally, and putting it all into perspective, since December 2007, or the start of the Great Depression ver 2.0, the number of jobs lost is 4.5 million, while those added to foodstamps and disability rolls, has increased by a unprecedented 21 million. Oh and about $7 or $8 trillion in debt. Who's counting really.

mnottertail -> RE: Another Romney gaff ? (10/6/2012 8:03:56 AM)

So, it really doesnt pictorally explain Willards blowing a headpipe again.
