ORIGINAL: fucktoyprincess dc, I think that this case brings together a number of things that bring the growing disparity within America into focus. The case neatly sums up many fears that Americans have about growing wealth disparity, gun laws, race, crime and a person's right to be free from unnecessary interference and a person's right to defend oneself. So for example, race is a factor, the gated community is a factor, guns are a factor, the hoodie is a factor, and the law in question is a factor - many pieces of this represent an "us" vs "them" disparity (however one chooses to define these terms). Countries in the world that have huge income disparity, and where people live in gated communities and have personal bodyguards (for example, some countries in South America would fit this description) are also not safe, secure places to live or safe secure economies. And this case exemplifies where the US is headed if we are not careful. I think one's viewpoint on this case says a lot about the America that one envisions for the future. And it is rather clear to me that only one of these futures would be considered a success story. There have been studies on gated communities, some studies sugguest a "Fortress" view by those living in the community, also a "Us against Them".
