kalikshama -> New Obama Ad Goes After Mitt Romney On Big Bird (10/9/2012 12:44:48 PM)

The Obama campaign is out with a new TV ad, going after one of Mitt Romney's most memorable lines from last week's presidential debate: his desire to cut funding for PBS and its beloved Big Bird.

Since the debate -- which Romney was widely acknowledged to have won -- President Barack Obama has been campaigning around the country, saying his GOP challenger "plans to let Wall Street run wild again, but he’s bringing the hammer down on Sesame Street."

"Elmo, you better make a run for it!" joked Obama last week at a campaign event.

The latest tongue-in-cheek ad shows pictures of notoriously corrupt financial figures -- Bernie Madoff, Ken Lay and Dennis Kozlowski -- and states there is an "evil genius" who towered over them.

"One man has the guts to speak his name," says the narrator, with the ad then flashing to Romney saying "Big Bird" repeatedly -- followed by Big Bird cheerfully saying his own name.

"Big, yellow, a menace to our economy. Mitt Romney knows it's not Wall Street you have to worry about it, it's Sesame Street," adds the narrator.

The ad ends with a cute shot of Big Bird in his nest, with his teddy bear, sleeping: "Mitt Romney, taking on our enemies no matter where they nest."

quote:

The Obama campaign’s Big Bird nosedive
By Jennifer Rubin
“Jumped the shark.” “A campaign in panic.” “Lost it.” “Shocking.” These are just as few of the reactions among the media to the latest, dumbest move by the Obama campaign, an ad so trivial and unpresidential it makes one wonder if an epidemic of tone deafness has descended over Chicago:

Just the thing to get over an unpresidential, contentless debate performance by the incredible shrinking candidate, huh? The Republican National Committee couldn't resist and won the battle of Sesame Street ads.

Almost as intriguing as the lame ad was the near-uniform negative reaction among mainstream reporters and pundits of all stripes.

Let’s tally up the ways in which this ad is not helpful to the Obama camp. It keeps discussion of Debate-aggedon going. It is petty, suggesting that’s all the campaign has got to talk about. It makes Mitt Romney’s budget argument all the more powerful
— liberals can’t part with PBS subsidies, so how are they going to make the tough calls on the debt? It chews up news cycles and time, neither of which Obama can afford to fritter away at this point. It gives the media another opportunity to show their “even-handedness” by lambasting the Obama team (after months of cooing and protecting the president from hard questions). It will annoy liberals donors and the base, who are already wondering if Obama really wants to win this race.

Reaction to Obama's new ad.

Go ahead and hang your hat on this ad Kali, you won't have Obama's shoulder to cry on come November 7th.

Jon Stewart Tears Into Conservative Outrage Over Funding Sesame Street's "Propaganda," "Brainwashing"

On Monday night, Jon Stewart took on the presidential debate. In particular, the Big Bird Debacle of 2012. “Who fires Big Bird?” Stewart asked. Then proceeding to mock the reasoning behind the conservative outrage over federal funding for PBS.

You’d think cutting Sesame Street funding wouldn’t make much of a dent in grand scheme of things, Stewart observed, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Eight million taxpayer dollars fund the show.

Not a huge line in the budget, but it’s about principle! Cue Lou Dobbs‘ criticizing President Obama for wanting to cut $4 billion in tax breaks for Big Oil. That’s only 0.0008 percent of the $5 trillion Obama’s added to the deficit, Dobbs exclaimed.

Thus, by conservative logic, Stewart pondered, eight million is greater than four billion? And why do conservatives feel so strongly anyway? The answer lies in many angry comments that include “propaganda” and “brainwashing.”

So Fox News is “upset that empty-headed puppets are trying to brainwash and indoctrinate Americans?”

“Perhaps you could sue them,” Stewart quipped. “The charge could be copyright infringement.”

Stewart then turned to John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac at This Week with George Snuffleupagus, who informed us how to make Sesame Street more “palatable.”

First, a name change: Patriot Street. Second, sponsors: brought to you by “viewers like you?” No. Embrace free enterprise. Along with a slew of other recommendations, there was of course discouraging the culture of dependency. Sharing is caring? Not that simple.

Harsh realities. The way to go.

What happens November 7th? Nothing I am aware of. Opening deer hunting rifle season in Minnesota?  Nah, that's the 3rd.

I wonder if SNL used a licensed Big Bird?

Big Bird Responds To Mitt Romney On SNL

With Mitt Romney‘s PBS-Big Bird slam a ripe source for comedy this week, who better to add to the mockery than the Sesame Street character himself? Big Bird showed up on Weekend Update opposite Seth Meyers to react to his newfound celebrity.

Big Bird admitted that he had no idea that Romney name-dropped him until he got “millions of tweets.” Not Twitter tweets, just the tweets birds chirp at each other. Big Bird said he feels too famous now, whereas before he could blend in the crowd like any other normal eight-foot-tall talking bird.”

Meyers asked Big Bird if he wanted to make a political statement, but instead Big Bird opted to make another bird joke about politics.

m and how many times have people on the right been picked out over using copyright material, and no one here thought it worthy of a post,LMAO poor babies are getting desperate

DarkSteven -> RE: New Obama Ad Goes After Mitt Romney On Big Bird (10/9/2012 6:07:58 PM)

That's ridiculous.

Obama needs to target the independents and peel them away from Romney. He'll score points with his own supporters by supporting CTW, but he doesn't need that.

Lucylastic -> RE: New Obama Ad Goes After Mitt Romney On Big Bird (10/9/2012 6:14:49 PM)

Personally DS I think its kinda sad , that its even part of the political process, to be reduced to this is a sad commentary on american politics on both sides.

It is both amusing and sad that you can take away people's rights in this country and they will gladly hand them over, but threaten to take away Big Bird - well you got another thing coming....[&:]
