wnyThroatLover -> Do you see a difference...? (10/10/2012 7:26:36 AM)

I have to ask...well...because I ask everyone I can...

Are we the only two nutjobs in the world who see a distinction between marijuana and mushrooms and actual drugs?

Allow me to share our reasoning:

Marijuana grows strait from the ground, and without any sort of intervention from anyone, will reach it's final, smokeable, relaxing state.
The same goes for mushrooms, they grow, you eat, your mini vacation begins in 20-45 minutes.

Cocaine, while in its purest form, is just the sap from the coca leaf dried and powdered. In our opinion, that would be fine, should well enough be left alone.

Drugs, to us, have something else to them. They didnt just appear to the world as they are, someone mixed chemicals, did some sort of science experiment, and really has no idea the potential harm contained within. They may produce a euphoria, a wonderful sense of temporary well being, or whatever effect you're searching for, but like nutra-sweet, they arecompletely fake.

Why is it so many countries and governments try to ban the use of something completely natural? If you want to meet a group of people who are rediculously adamant about organics, to hell with the vegans, talk to a pot farmer!

And yes, I already know all the arguments about the lumber industry shutting down hemp for paper and blah blah this is why its illegal...I'm looking for personal opinions.

omg, I have loads of opinions on this, but I am sleepy so not gonna try to articulate just now.....

"Whoever ARticulated it PARticulated it!"

Aah...Futurama fart jokes...

LaTigresse -> RE: Do you see a difference...? (10/10/2012 7:41:21 AM)

My ahhhhh......experience, is rather limited. But I've no problem AT ALL with pot being legal. ( I believe it should be ).

I don't know enough about mushrooms to have any sort of intelligent opinion. Coke, there seems too many dangers and no real benefits, so I have no problem with it being illegal.

wnyThroatLover -> RE: Do you see a difference...? (10/10/2012 8:25:15 AM)

For purposes of knowledge distribution:

The effects of mushrooms (visual and occasionally audio hallucinations) are brought about by a very strong, very severe, very short lived case of food poisoning. Through studies there don't appear to be any effects that last more than 5 days after ingestion and the poisons are metabolized by the body and excreted as a combination of sugar, water, and a bit of salt.

If you've never tried cocaine, it would be hard to explain. But if kept natural (without the cutters and additives added through the distribution process) it is no more addicting than cotton candy. Although, if you've ever tried to kick a cotton candy addiction, it can be so rough!

My addiction to dark chocolate is not one to be mocked.

The rest..........meh.

While I have nothing against legalizing marijauna, save for having that horrible smell around; I believe your premise is of "if it is natural it can't be bad", is invalid. There are plenty of plants, including mushrooms that are natural yet harmful. The hallucinogen in mushrooms is a poison as you point out, how much of a poison depends on the location, season and variety. Hopefully anyone ingesting it would have done their research on the fungus before ingesting.

Marijauna is a drug, a natural one. It has been proven to reduce nausea, increase appetite, and induce a relaxed state and is helpful for people who need those benefits. But, I have known too many people who wake up and smoke, take a break and smoke, sleep and smoke, and who do little else, to believe it is harmless. One of my favorite people was my sisters boyfriend and he lived to smoke weed. She supported him for 7 yrs before getting tired of being the source of the cash he spent in his blissful days of being stoned. He was funny as heck. I really liked him, but there was no question he was a layabout.

wnyThroatLover -> RE: Do you see a difference...? (10/10/2012 10:29:51 AM)

Missokyst

We arent trying to say that anything natural is fine, though I do see where you are coming from with that, but you don't see anyone illegalizing certain types of mushrooms just because if you eat them you're likely to die. Luckily for me, I suppose, I am pretty up to speed with the drug world (along with many other things under the category of "crimes of consent")

There are days where I have been known to wake up and smoke (wake-n-bake), wait a few, and smoke more, wait a bit and smoke more, all day long, but I still get things done. Sure it's nice to get high and veg all day, and sometimes that's perfectly acceptable, but I can tell you from personal experience, 98ish% of pot smokers arent the steriotypical layabouts people think they are. But just like your sisters ex, there are people who do the same thing with alcohol, opiates, perscription drugs, video games, tv shows and food, shall we illegalize all of them too? Well...the opiates already are.

And just like lavender, the smell of fresh and/or smoked marijuana is pleasant to some and offensive to others.

For those who don't know, a crime of consent is just another way of saying "victimless crime".
Growing a pot plant in your back yard or livingroom sends no money to foreign drug lords...it doesn't kill school children or fund terrorism and smoking your plant affects noone butyou. Same with motorcycle helmet laws, seatbelt laws, and other such nanny laws. If the only one in any danger is you, and as a consenting adult who knows the risks you decide to participate in such an action, why should you be jailed for it..

...where is my right to persue happiness?

From my nursing perspective, I have looked after too many people who are either coming down or in the midst of drug induced psychosis.

This can happen with any drug - remember the definition of a drug is something that alters the normal composition and functioning of the body. During these episodes, I've been called every name under the sun, attempted to be bitten, kicked, punched, scratched, grabbed, pinched. It is rather unpleasant and you will never find a nurse who enjoys looking after someone who is either high or has a history of taking drugs.

Dependency (not to be confused with addiction) occurs very quickly - and withdrawal from your "regular" activities starts within 48-72 hours. So a good example is you unexpectedly get in a major car accident - multiple injuries and you need to be in hospital for 2-3 weeks. Within 48 hours, you will start withdrawing from your daily habit of marijuana (or alcohol, or whatever), on top of your recovery from your injuries. Not pleasant.

Then there are the longterm effects. Our westernised society doesn't particularly enjoy taking self responsibility for their actions and end up playing the victim when something they did backfired on them. Various ways of ingesting these drugs so have long term effects - smoking marijuana can still cause lung cancer because you are breathing in carcinogenic smoke.

So, long story short I do not support the de-criminalisation of drugs that are currently considered illicit. I do however support further medical and scientific research into the extraction of cannabinoids for symptom management in many illnesses such as cancer.

However, with that said, I don't care what other people do. It's their business, not mine.

wnyThroatLover -> RE: Do you see a difference...? (10/10/2012 10:42:22 AM)

Fair enough, KitKat, very valid points....

...however...in all my years I have NEVER seen anyone go through anything that could even remotely titles "withdrawl." People who try to quit smoking cigarttes cold turkey (or maybe chocolate [;)]) go through withdrawl, people who haven't smoked for a week after a joint a day habbit for 5 years are still just sober people. And marijuana dependancy? Only seen it once...ever...with someone who had severe dependancy issues to begin with...and she was a very special case.

Sure...smoking anything can cause lung cancer...shit...sitting around too many campfires will kill you eventually.

I have to ask tho, you don't support decriminalization of any drugs...thats fine, but have you ever tried any? Have you "found out what the hype was about?" Do you drink? It's been shown that someone who drinks a glass of wine a night, while good for your arteries, is more likely to suffer liver failure than someone smoking weed every day is to get lung cancer.

I believe anything that you introduce into your body and alters your natural state/brain is a drug.

Because not everyone responds to different chemicals the same. Some people tend to get violent. Alcohol the most dangerous drug of them all, kills more people than every other drug combined. And its legal. Just imagine if say cocaine were legal and that many more people got behind the wheel and drove. - "Lets go to the local cocaine bar Jimmy" - "oh sure Sally" -
Plus cocaine is seriously addicting. Your cotton-candy reference is not accurate. It may be like that for YOU - but other people react to it VERY differently. I fucking hate people that sit and jones. Or people that do weird things with their mouth, or sweat, or foam at the mouth. Its like: get the FUCK away from me. I know someone who died from it a few years ago = he had a heart attack. I wasnt that sad about it, cause I couldnt stand him anyway.

Mushrooms - I've seen footage of Haight-Ashbury in the late sixties. Enough said. Thats a SAD NOTE.

I dont see any problem with weed - never have. I quit smoking it YEARS ago. Just wasnt my thang.

Im not into any of those drugs. I am from the valley of the dolls myself.

I have no desire to "discover the hype." I was straight edge for almost 10 years when I recently started drinking alcohol socially (and sporadically - special occasions like NYE, Thanksgiving, my wedding). So, my liver is certainly not at risk of alcohol damage.

You are only given one body so I believe that people should take a proactive, holistic approach to looking after their bodies, inside & outside. I don't believe in self-destructing behaviours.

CRYPTICLXVI -> RE: Do you see a difference...? (10/10/2012 1:02:28 PM)

I had a house years ago that had as one of the decorative plants, planted at the turn of the last century, nightshade. A friend had a house not quite as old as mine that had in the flower garden poppies, turned out, after a little research that they were opium poppies. A lot of old houses have them, they were popular as a landscaping plant into the thirties. Should plants be criminalized? No, they are fucking plants. Does that mean plants should be ingested? Well, that should be a civil decision, not a criminal decision.

Hell, nutmeg can be a hallucinogenic if taken in a high enough dosage.

Now catnip, that shit should be illegal as hell, I've seen what it can do to cats...

Duskypearls -> RE: Do you see a difference...? (10/10/2012 1:05:07 PM)

Forget the "Nip," Cryp, for in human's it is sedative in action.

It is hilarious. I thought the dry catnip was lethal till I planted a live plant in my outdoor enclosure for the cats. They went CRAZY. It's like a dangerous love affair.

Yet it is a mint, and makes a fair tea for human consumption, but then I want to lick my paws.......

You can do whatever you want to yourself
in my opinion, it's up to you.

Some of the coolest, smartest people I know
are massive stoners, like so much that I have
no idea what they are like straight...

Others, I've seen weed fuck their life and
make them pathetic.

I love relaxing with catmint tea. My cats like cozying up to me while I'm sipping it.

Re: the aroma of whacky tobacky.... it makes me nauseous. My son has been known to spark up on occasion. I spray air fresheners & light candles when he does.

RemoteUser -> RE: Do you see a difference...? (10/10/2012 10:10:14 PM)

Other than the method of manufacture, I don't see many differences.

I tried marijuana when I was younger and it induced a violent psychotic episode. I worked it out over the years, and it has to do with having my sense of physical balance and spacial relations skewed. I have since been able to take a puff or two, but it has little effect in such low amounts.

Maybe it was a bad batch, but it certainly didn't draw me back. I would try it again, with friends around in case I had a similar reaction.

Needless to say, if that was the effect of a "lightweight" drug, anything harder has zero appeal to me. Hallucinogenics, perhaps, but bearing in careful mind what I stated above I would be cautious.

This does not affect my opinion of the drug. I have friends who use it for pain moderation, and others who use it in a recreational fashion with no adverse effects whatsoever. I would welcome its legalization, although I doubt the fans of legalizing marijuana take into account the taxation that would follow (good for the economy, but maybe a bummer for the individual).
