Florida pastor Terry Jones denied entry into Canada

A Florida pastor who burned copies of the Qur'an in April 2012 has been denied entry into Canada after being held up for several hours at the Detroit-Windsor border, a handler for the church confirmed to CTV News.

Terry Jones was expected in Toronto Thursday evening to take part in a free speech debate with leaders from other faiths on the lawns of Queen's Park.

The debate is expected to continue.

Im sure the free speechers will hate this, the irony isnt lost tho:)

DarkSteven -> RE: Denied entry .... wahhhh (10/12/2012 7:08:53 AM)

What was the stated reason?

Lucylastic -> RE: Denied entry .... wahhhh (10/12/2012 7:10:41 AM)

Stephanie Sapp said Jones was denied entry because of a fine he got in Germany almost 20 years ago for using the title "doctor" there (he had received an honorary doctorate in theology from a Californian university in 1993). Also, both men had been charged with breaching the peace at a planned rally in Detroit last year.

The spokeswoman told The Associated Press that Jones had paid the German fine at that time and won his appeal to the German government for the right to use the title "doctor." She said border officials told Jones the Canadian government requires documentation of the whole case to be brought to a Canadian Consulate in America in order for them to consider allowing Jones into Canada again.

As for the Detroit-related charge, she said that case was overturned in a higher court on appeal.

"We consider this to be a grievous blow to freedom of speech. We hope that this is a lesson for the Canadians and the Americans for us to stand up, unite together, and protect our freedom of speech," said Jones in a statement.

Canadian border officials said it is not their practice to confirm whether someone has been denied entry into Canada.

Terry Jones has every right to free speech. That said, that is a US-protected right, and is not necessarily something Canada has to honor if they see things differently (and that can vary person-to-person, imo). And, I will also add, that the right to free speech doesn't mean you have the right to that speech wherever you want. No one has to provide someone with a forum for free speech to be protected.

In the end, Terry Jones has the right to speak his mind. He also has the responsibility to the consequences of his words.

Bravo, Canada!
Bravo, le Canada!

Bloody Canadians, Don't they know he is an angel of god? lol

Lucylastic -> RE: Denied entry .... wahhhh (10/12/2012 7:24:07 AM)

well he may think he is, and so do his "followers...."
God?? he aint sayin much.
That doesnt hold much truck with canadian border officials tho... they be hardasses to anyone who shows up with a crim record, wether that is the actual reason, is open to "debate"

YN -> RE: Denied entry .... wahhhh (10/12/2012 8:34:32 AM)

Canada like any place is entitled to admit or deny admittance as they please.

However the stated grounds they used in this case are questionable at best. Being fined for using the title doctor in Germany, and being involved in civil disobedience in Colorado, both of which are claimed to have been successfully resolved in his favor in later proceedings.

Better to have openly stated they did not want a reactionary fool stirring up mischief in Canada then to use such specious grounds as an excuse.

Lucylastic -> RE: Denied entry .... wahhhh (10/12/2012 8:37:30 AM)

a dui will get you refused entry... they have already said they will look into his case for future admittance....
plus they havent actually admitted they denied him, or why

Just how protected is that right in the 'States?
Plenty of people pushing less fashionable viewpoints than Jones have been blackballed by the media something rotten.

Moonhead -> RE: Denied entry .... wahhhh (10/12/2012 11:04:41 AM)

Bit rough on Canada, surely?

subspaceseven -> RE: Denied entry .... wahhhh (10/12/2012 12:20:13 PM)

The freedom of speech, is such that the government can't interfere with it, it does not protect you against a business from kicking you off their airways, not allow you to speak in their building or on their property

The Freedom of Speech has nothing to do with the general public in regards to businesses and public safety

A lot of people in this country think that they can say whatever they want because of the FOS, and they do, then they bitch because they get fired, well life is a bitch, and the government did not stop you from saying it, you just suffer the consequences of your words

I wish Canada would have let him in, but not let him out

Dont get em all stirred up again. They will insist they have free speech, even if you point out all the instances under law when they dont have free speech.

Terry Jones was banned from entering the UK ages ago, all he wanted to do was give a lecture to the EDL ffs.
And as Lucy said....welcome back.
