MasterG2kTR -> I Need Homework Help - Any Electricians Here?? (10/14/2012 11:01:01 AM)

This is the problem (I know....not the best diagram) and please if this is not an area where you are an expert please don't guess at it.

             |---------------|---------------|----------------|
          + |                   |                   |                    |
4.50v                     10.0 ohm      20.0 ohm        15.0 ohm   <-- Resistors
          -  |                  |                   |                    |
             |---------------|---------------|----------------|

If the 20.0 ohm resistor burns out, what is the voltage drop across the 10.0 ohm and 15.0 ohm resistors?

There are two separate answers to this problem.
All I really need is the proper formula to figure it out.........anybody???

Well, this is a simple parallel circuit, you should be able to solve this without any formula, just knowing what are the properties of a parallel circuit. Just revise the properties of the parallel circuit, what happens in the resistor in terms of voltage and current when it's in series and when it's parallel.

I have realized that 30 years ago, I could have answered this in no time at all......now, I just know for sure how much brain I have lost in my lifetime!!!

Good luck.

E=I/R

V=current/resistance

Voltage drop in a parallel circuit is equal to the voltage drop across the largest resistor

I think I just sprained something..........

areal, that is not correct. V=R.i

it might help you to think in a parallel circuit as the same circuit you have for the light at your home, and what happens if you have all the lights are on, and you turn one off (opens the circuit, remove one of the resistors). It's the same thing.
