Just in time for Monday`s debate no less.

How is Mitt going to argue that the President is weak and ineffectual? That`s going to take more balls than
Mitt`s got....

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2012/10/iran-ready-talk-about-their-nuclear-program/58168/

It took a lot of hard work WITH our allies and friends and even with russia...to pull this off.

As well,we`ve ruined Iran`s money and economy with the sanctions we and our allies worked TOGETHER on......

Great leadership and great vision from the President.

"This is convenient timing. The New York Times' Helene Cooper and Michael Landry report Iran has finally agreed to sit down for the first time for one-on-one negotiations with the U.S. over their controversial nuclear program.

The catch: they won't sit down until after the election is over. They don't want to start negotiating with a President who may or may not be there in two weeks.

But the agreement is a big get for Obama, the culmination of four years of "secret, intense" negotiations between the two sides.

There are a bunch of other logistics to work out, including getting final, official say from Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Top officials have agreed to the talks but Ali Khamenei hasn't signed off.

Israel was pretty skeptical Iran would be productive when they spoke to the Times. Israel's spent much of the last year drawing red lines for Iran's controversial nuclear program. They don't want Iran to go over a certain enrichment level without incurring the wrath of an attack.

Skeptics are already saying the agreement is an effort from Iran to ease international tension on them.

Others are saying they're bending to the sanctions that are tanking their economy"

Why now with the “wait till after the election” caveat? Just stalling my friend that’s all. Why push their economy to ruin…get close to their goal, if they don‘t already have a weapon…then back off with no gain?

They just need a few more months to become nuclear capable and are afraid of an attack when they are soooo close ….So time for fake negotiations…In my opinion anyway….we will see.

No one thinks they're close enough for a couple of months to make difference.

Not sure if you speak for every American. There are a few who`re quite OK with WW III starting in the ME.

Trust but verify with a healthy dose of skepticism would be the way to go.

Trashing the ruskies as our new #1 enemy as Mitt did yesterday would be the dumb thing to do,considering they have a huge amount of influence and ties with the Iranians.

No one really knows… the Washington Post writes that the Atomic Energy Commission says Iran already has enough materials to make one bomb.

I, like everyone, do hope they are serious about talks but I fail to see a reason to make this announcement publicly right now.

The Iranians are also tight with North Korea, and we all know how well the administration's deal with them went.

We need a President who knows how to get things done, not just send out a conveniently timed press release.

COUGH *BullSHIT!* Cough

If anyone has done anything, I imagine it has been ISRAEL. They are the ones behind Stuxnet, and Flame, They are the ones behind the assassinations of Iran's Atomic Scientist. I mean the last one that they killed, some dude on a motorcycle drove up to the car in rush hour traffic, attached a magnetic bomb to the car drove off and Bye bye and buy bonds.

I do not see America having the brass balls to pull that little shindig off. Only Israel sees how dangerous these people are. I am sure you remember your beloved president Obama getting up and telling the world that if he was elected how he would sit down with America's Enemies and have talks?? Or his wonderful apology to the Islamic world???

Oh I guess we are forgetting all that. No I don't want Mitt in there but trust me Obama is more smoke and mirrors than he is substance. Israel will take the fight to Iran. Obama will want to run an encounter group with them.

I`ll bet money tho, that Bibi Netanyahu gives more credit to our President for this than all the con-whiners combined.

Considering Netanyahu gave more props to our President for the killing of bin-laden........... than all the chicken-hawk-cons combined.

Ummm ... you do get that the fact that we're not talking about a minor negotiation process here right? I think a timetable stretching into a period of a few weeks is rather reasonable. But please, since you appear to believe a different process should occur. By all means tell us of other times when critical negotiations were thrown together in two weeks. I of course mean ones that produced favorable results.
Personally, I think the above position is reminiscent of Tag Romney

Best get that cough looked at. Israel HAS OF COURSE played a role. Where do we send the medal? Economic sanctions and the certain knowledge that Israel would not be alone in any action had a lot to do with it.

They don't need U238 because we all know a dirty bomb is harmless, right Owner

If Obama believes Iran holding on their nuke program is legit, he's as foolish as Clinton was believing the North Koreans. EVERYBODY knows this is just a farce to give the appearance of a win for the Obama camp 16 days before the election.

I hate to put a damper on something that would have been welcome news but it seems the White House is now denying this report:

"The Obama administration has moved quickly to water down a report that the US and Iran have agreed in principle to meet one-on-one for negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme.

The New York Times said secret talks between officials that began early in Barack Obama's term as president had delivered the provisional agreement. Iran had insisted the talks wait until after the November presidential election, the New York Times said, attributing the information to a senior official in the Obama administration.

However the National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in response that the United States would continue to work with fellow permanent members of the UN security council and Germany.

"It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," the statement said.

"We continue to work with the P5+1 [five permanent members of the UN security council plus Germany] on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally
."

Remember how they said they thought bin laden was in Kashmir for a.while? The Whitehouse kept recycling that idea for quite some time and during part of that time, we now know they had bin laden's precise location under direct surveillance. Sorry they're again not keeping you and.the press in the loop. Should that turn out to be.the case.

..."The catch: they won't sit down until after the election is over..."

I think this is the key. Hope and Change president is creating an illusion of being "flexible" before the next Dog and Pony show ("sometimes mistakenly referred as the debate").

Wonderful news. The US has been pressuring Iran to negotiate through the use of sanctions, and it paid off. I hope the negotiations are fruitful.

Um, per an update in the article, the WH is denying Iran's agreement but the Times is sticking with its story. It looks like the regime agreed but Khameini has not agreed as yet and the administration is trying to back off pressuring him. I hope this does come to pass.

If it does, then this will be a major victory for Obama and hopefully future administrations will learn - years of internationally approved sanctions and pressure takes a long time (and engenders politically biased charges of being weak and indecisive) but it sure is a less taxing and bloody alternative than invading and occupying countries.

I suspect that the administration has recently added inducements to Iran in order to have an announcement prior to the election, and to make Romney look like a bloodthirsty fool for saber rattling.
