The former Republican candidate in the 19th district State Senate race has been indicted on 113 felony counts for allegedly sexually abusing a child.

The Delaware Attorney General’s office says a Sussex County grand jury issued an indictment charging 53 year old Eric Bodenweiser of Georgetown with 39 counts of first degree unlawful sexual intercourse and 74 counts of second-degree unlawful sexual contact.

The charges come after Delaware State Police investigated information it received that Bodenweiser sexually abused a child. The indictment charges Bodenweiser with sexually abusing a juvenile victim between October 1987 and August 1990.

Bodenwesier turned himself in, was arraigned and is in the Sussex Correctional Institution. His bail is set at $250,000. If he posts bail, he will be monitored by GPS device and be subject to pre-trial supervision by Probation and Parole.

Bodenwieser first suspended, then ended his campaign last week for personal reasons. He defeated incumbent Joe Booth in the September Republican primary.

The Delaware Republican Party last week threw its support to former Georgetown mayor Brian Pettyjohn’s write in candidacy for the 19th district senate seat. Democrat Jane Hovington is also seeking the seat.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that there are other politicians that have served with that shit in their background, even winning an election after the events (obviously, I doubt that info came out in the campaign).

James Traficant ran a re-election campaign from his jail cell while serving a sentence for a racketeering conviction. He didn't win, but, he still had the nads to run.

I hope he gets to share a cell with Jerry Sandusky.

There is a long list of candidates and elected officials who have been arrested and convicted of just this kind of thing. And its getting worse.

I would disagree Tazzy. I think that this kind of thing is just more likely to be brought out, brought to court, and less likely to to be swept under the rug. Also, with the World Wide Web, it is more likely to be known by a greater number of people in a more places. Instead of just the locals knowing from their local newspaper.

I'm not saying it isn't true, but your comment assumes it is true. Let the man be tried and found guilty first in a proper court of law.

On the other hand, he might truly be an idiot. [&:]

113 counts is sorta hard not to believe.

If that were true, why would we ever bother with trials? Kinda defeats the purpose of our criminal justice system...

lol... Just for you I will hold out some slim margin that he may, possibly, be innocent. [;)]

Gonna agree with Rich. A majority of politicians ot the national level are, by definition, arrogant. Their arrogance sometimes leads them to believe that "Rules are for the little people, not me. I'm too important".

This is what happens when the bottom dregs replace the cream at the top. Politics, when not watched by the electorate, becomes the playground of just this sort. These charges are damning, but is this case really any different from the various corruptions that pervades politics these days?

tazzygirl -> RE: Just sick! (10/23/2012 6:08:27 AM)

Yes. Is there really anything lower than the crimes he is charged with?

My guess would be the state has a strong case against this guy if they have 113 indictments. My guess is he won't last long in prison if found guilty.

I would agree with this. I remember back with the Clinton/Monica scandal. You know how all those psycho analysts come out to talk about the why's of someone doing things like that, and it was explained at the time, being in a position of power makes them think they can get away with it. They feel they are above the law and wouldn't be questioned, and another reason offered was it is the thrill of doing something scandalous and banking on the fact (hope) they won't get caught. It probably goes beyond politics too (Jerry Sandusky comes to mind), but a politician has a lot of power.

Hey Lookie?

I specifically said this was not a Dem vs Republican issue.

Wanna know why?

Because there are thousands of sites with both parties crimes listed... including those of child rape/molestation.

So why dont you stick with the OP and shove the partisan bullshit.

This isnt about a Republican, its about an "alleged" monster in our political system.

I'm agreeing with all the previous posters who said that the powerful feel that they are beyond the rules. It would appear that the arrogance of some powerful men knows no limits.

Nor does it recognise any boundaries. It's just as likely to happen on the Centre, Right or Left, in the USA, Australia or Europe. Power attracts monsters. Power corrupts. Power feeds belief of personal invincibility just as surely as it corrupts moral boundaries. Nor is this abusive behaviour an exclusive monopoly of politics or religion. (Look at the Michael Jackson case or the current scandal surrounding Jimmy Saville, the UK TV personality.)

Worse still, it is almost impossible to design a proactive system to weed out the monsters in advance without severely infringing personal freedoms and general liberty.

I am not disagreeing with the enlarged statement at all. I actually completely agree with it. Setting limitations on the power of a position prior to a person getting into that position, and then maintaining those limitations would be the way to control that abuses from monsters who get into that position.

This is one of those things that I think the Founding Fathers recognized and why their intent should be leading the way regarding interpretation of the US Constitution.

A few quotes about power:
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. -- Lord Acton
Because power corrupts, society's demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases. -- John Adams
It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power. -- David Brin
We're taught Lord Acton's axiom: all power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I believed that when I started these books, but I don't believe it's always true any more. Power doesn't always corrupt. Power can cleanse. What I believe is always true about power is that power always reveals. -- Robert Caro

That last one is quite interesting and profound. David Brin's quote may also be dead on accurate, too.

And, this is why I also believe in a very strict Conservative interpretation of the US Constitution. And, when you have the opportunity to either maintain a power level or increase the power level of a position (or body), it is better to err on the side of not increasing the power. The greater the power, the more attractive the position.
