no politician should tell women that any part of being raped is a gift from God.

No part of rape is "a gift from God."

Last night a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate claimed that raped women should be forced to carry their rapist's baby to term because their pregnancy -- a result of rape -- is a "gift from God."1

Tell Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock: Rape is a heinous act of violence, and no politician should tell women that any part of being raped is a gift from God.

Richard Mourdock is a Tea Party Republican who defeated incumbent Republican Senator Richard Lugar in a surprise upset in Indiana's primary election for U.S. Senate. He is currently in a dead heat with the Democratic challenger -- the latest polls are within the margin of error.2

If enough of us speak out we can turn Mourdock's remark into a "Todd Akin" moment and ensure that Indiana and the rest of the nation learns just how extreme he is when it comes to women.

Mourdock's exact words -- in the debate with his Democratic opponent -- were:

I struggled with myself for a long time but I came to realize life is that gift from God, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape. It is something that God intended to happen.

Tell Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock: Rape is a heinous act of violence, and no politician should tell women that any part of being raped is a gift from God.

Mourdock is a staunch believer that abortion should be illegal even for victims of rape and incest. But even for an anti-abortion Tea Party Republican claiming that any part of of being raped is for the woman a "gift from God" is appalling.

Make no mistake: Tea Party Republicans like Mourdock will stop at nothing to send women back to the Stone Age. And if he wins election in Indiana, he will put Republicans one seat closer to control of the Senate. And that could mean that extreme anti-woman legislation passed readily in the House -- defunding Planned Parenthood, redefining rape, blocking access to birth control -- would now have a shot at passing the Senate.

Rape is rape. And it is not acceptable for a Republican politician campaigning for one of the highest offices in our government to tell women that if they get pregnant as a result of rape, that it's a "gift from God."

Surely this man isn't going to be elected anyway....

If this fellow is elected, what does that say about Senator Claire McCaskill?

If people got screwed out of stuff, every time they mis-spoke, the idiot in the Whitehouse would have already been impeached and removed.

Ya gotta love the liberal lefty; the champion of free speech (as long as they agree with it)!

Petition un-signed.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I know all these scientifically-challenged Republicans blend together, but Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill's opponent is Todd Akin, the "legitimate rape" guy.

Akin's firm anti-abortion stance gained national attention in the Senate race when he remarked in a mid-August TV interview that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in "legitimate rape."

Richard Mourdock is running in Indiana against Rep. Joe Donnelly.

If there are any undecideds here in P&R, I'm not aware of them. I post these petitions in the hopes that those who share my concerns will post them on FaceBook and thus raise awareness in "low information" voters.

"Tell Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock: Rape is a heinous act of violence, and no politician should tell women that any part of being raped is a gift from God."

i guess i'm failing to see the point of the petition. wouldn't it be more effective to post a petition in support of whomever is running against mourdock?

Sorry, Hill. Apples and oranges.

One is mis-speaking or speaking stupidly (if you prefer) and one is preventing a man from earning his daily bread. Not even in the same grocery aisle.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Just because you claim something doesn't make it so. So-called 'lefties' as you call them are the only ones who give a shit about employee rights.

Is this petition better?

http://act.weareultraviolet.org/sign/mourdock/

Last night, ANOTHER Republican candidate for office made ANOTHER offensive comment about rape. This time it was Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock saying pregnancies resulting from rape are what God intended.1 This is on the heels of Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin's comments that women don't get pregnant from "legitimate" rape,2 Pennsylvania Senate candidate Tom Smith saying that having children out of wedlock is basically the same thing as rape,3 and Rep. Steve King saying he has never heard of anyone getting pregnant from statutory rape.4

Add it all up and we have a very serious, disturbing problem when it comes to Republican men running for office and how they view women.

But something about Mourdock's comment is even more disturbing: Mitt Romney just released an ad endorsing him. While he's tepidly tried to distance himself from Mourdock today, he hasn't pulled his endorsement and the ad is still on the air.5 And Senator John Cornyn, head of the National Republican Senate Campaign Committee, is **defending** Mourdock.6

Can you send a clear message to Mitt Romney and the Republicans about how you feel about these comments as a voter? If they want women's votes, they need to stop supporting candidates with extreme views on rape. Mitt Romney must withdraw his endorsement of Mourdock and Republican campaign committees must stop supporting him right away.

Add your name to the petition.

There are just 2 weeks before the election and campaign committees are really susceptible to public pressure right now. If enough of us speak out quickly and loudly, we can make a difference here. And we can make it clear to members of both parties that playing politics with rape is just flat out wrong.

This isn't just an issue that upsets progressive women--it upsets all women.

Even Christine Todd Whitman, former Republican Governor of New Jersey and Bush EPA Administrator, is appalled and calling on Romney to strongly reject Mourdock.7

Rape is rape. It is not a political game. And we, women and men alike, deserve better from candidates of any political party.

Add your name to the petition: http://act.weareultraviolet.org/sign/mourdock/

Thanks for speaking out,

--Nita, Shaunna, Kat, and Karin, the UltraViolet team

Sorry. I'm no lefty and I care about emplyee rights.

No, Hill, my comment was like I said in my first post on this thread; people can mis-speak and there's a certain population that will twist it to fit their fucked up, skewed, political needs. Or, we could, of course, make something of Barry Obama having campaigned in 57 (Muslim) states back in '08?

No, this is desperate people, twisting a poorly worded statement (and I believe I read that it was during a debate so not pre-scripted like a speech) into a reason to run their nuts through a ringer; the same people who excuse a president that can't provide a fairly simple history for themself or lying to congress as "just a blowjob". It doesn't pass the giggle test.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

eh...somewhat. note though, the mitt romney ad supporting mourdock came days before he made those statements. romney has since made a statement distancing himself from the comments, so the description is slightly misleading.

like i stated before, a petition supporting the candidate (and i don't even know that person's name) opposing mourdock would be more effective than sending out petitions that say "rape is rape".

and this is the OP, replied to the wrong person.
