FR from the OP

How did this become an abortion thread?

dcnovice,

Given the ≥90% termination rate for Down's Syndrome, it is hard to avoid touching on the subject of abortions. And, given that it shows roughly what percentage of the population is pro-choice when the chips are down, it is hard to avoid touching on the hypocrisy of trying to deny its validity and curtail its legality (in a democratic nation, that is).

IWYW,

Ummmm good luck finding someone willing to have you stuff a bleeding 200# man up inside her snatch so he can get 'assistance'.

That was a REALLY bad analogy marc.

The point is that just because someone can't survive outside the womb, that doesn't mean they are not human... it just means that they can't survive outside the womb.

What makes it a wholly inaccurate analogy is that the injured man would not survive "inside the womb" within those circumstances.

the image of a bleeding man crawling towards a woman's open legs for safety is pretty hilarious, though.

...okay, maybe not HILARIOUS.

Know what's intersting about Far Right posters and media personalities?

They attribute being "whiny" and "professional victims" to those left of center but they tend to be the whiniest bitches on here and in the media.

There's nobody does "victim" like an evangelical Christian. For them, when other people have different beliefs and priorities, it can genuinely feel like a personal attack (because it makes you question and feel doubt and actually think). So they basically go around feeling persecuted all the time.

Once the child is born, however (although I think this should happen at the age of viability), basic human rights are granted.

It pretty much is... to a point. Abortion on demand is no longer an option in most states at that point. And, where it is, a Doctor can refuse.

There are only a couple of doctors in the US that can/will even perform late-term abortions (at least above-board, there could still be back-alley butchers doing them), and it's pretty much only done for serious medical issues. Sometimes parents find out 6 months into the pregnancy that their baby isn't going to survive birth, or will be brain-dead on life-support forever, or there's some complication that may kill the mother if she continues the pregnancy, or something like that.... and then they have to make a hard choice.

Okay, I'm back... but not for long. Its going to be time to batten down the hatches soon for whatever Sandy has left for us when she gets here. I hope everyone else in the path of the storm is okay.

The unborn are indeed an exception.

That, ultimately, is my point.

One can be born alive, or still born. There is no magic window into the womb, even with the great technology we have. And when people start tossing about how technology allows us to better determine when a fetus has a heart beat, and when it feels, then science must also be allowed a say in when that fetus is viable.

Well, I've already made my points about viability as a factor in being human. While I don't dismiss people's concerns about reproductive rights I do believe that emotional attachment (or lack thereof) to something that is cute (or is not) plays a big role. A a zygote or a fetus doesn't look human (that is, our idea of what a human should look like) therefore we don't have any emotional attachment to it. It is the same human nature/instinct that can compel us to rush inside a burning building to save a kitten (awwww... so cute) but say to hell with the tarantula (ewww....).

The worthier question is: would it be murder if we did?

Failure to act. Sin of omission. Already greatly debated throughout history, I believe. Perhaps one day we will have it here... but I think this thread has drifted far enough already.

I don't understand? You've had a few million benign homos removed? You monster! You're worse than Hitler!

I'm joking, of course... but I really don't understand what you mean.

Without a mother, a fertilized egg will not.

With a genetics lab, a wart may well.

Someday, perhaps, but that day is still a ways away. Even so, one could argue that a fertilized egg, allowed to follow its natural course, will continue to grow into an adult human... whereas a wart will not.

The same way any thread becomes an abortion thread... abortion was mentioned. It truly is one of the most divisive issues of our day.

True... but the purpose of the womb is to provide life support, and so is the purpose of an ambulance.

I have no idea if THIS is real or fake, but either way... enjoy.
