A former student wrote in "The Amherst Student" a first hand account of her rape and the subsequent treatment she received from the College's administrators following her reporting of same ( http://amherststudent.amherst.edu/?q=article%2F2012%2F10%2F17%2Faccount-sexual-assault-amherst-college )
(I sure hope that link works,I am not very good at this,but please,please if it doesn't could someone come along and fix it for me...this is a powerful piece of writing that deserves being read by as many people as possible)
As the uncle of a lovely young girl about to go off and look at college's I was shocked dismayed and increasingly(as I read it) angry.
I know society has a long way to go in how we prevent and deal with rape in general...but if we can't feel safe that when we send our daughters off to universities that they will be safe....or that in the worst possible case
,should some tragedy befall them,that they will at least,as victims , receive a sympathetic and healing reception,aren't we failing those same daughters ?
I started out this morning to read my newspaper .....unfortunately or fortunately I read a Times article on this piece and followed the link to the piece itself.....my sunny disposition vanished in a blink
I know this OP is a little disjointed.....but I am a bit angry

welcome to real world.. hard to believe you have never read anything like this before.. its pretty typical for universities & colleges to sweep rape under the rug..

That was uncalled for tj,I have long been aware of the practice of under-reporting,I have long known there was a problem on our nations campus's.
Not hard to figure that out,you put young men,away from home for perhaps the first time,into a frat house atmosphere...add liquor ,mix young ladies(also drinking liquor) and you have a recipe for sexual assault and outright rape.

What did surprise me was the outright hostility victims could face once they mustered the courage needed to report(thats another thing,what other crime calls for the victim to be courageous just to come forward and report that she has,indeed been a victim ?)

What did strike me was that this young woman's story needed to be read by as many people as possible.
Perhaps if only for those who don't operate in "the real world" to read

what has gone on and reports like this one has been chatted about on threads here before, as well as in articles for people to read... its not anything new.. especially if you dont report the rape the minute after it happened.. You are the one that made this sound like such a revelation to you.. People only read what they open their eyes to read.. just cuz you have never read about the hositility students face doesnt mean the articles havent been out there to read.. Its just like I dont read the sports section...

Okay,though I am still not sure just how I "made this sound like such a revelation" to me.
I do know I stated that the article had banished what till that point was a sunny disposition on the day...not on life in general or a belief that all was rosy in the world.
But I'm not going to argue this with you,whether or not you feel all I do is read sports pages isn't real important to me,certainly not worth an argument that detracts in the least from the power of this young woman's tale.
I made my niece read it,I posted it here.....now I guess I'll go back to the sports pages(wondering all the time if my penis just got me in trouble with TJ

)
