I need to do the same to these card services bastards...had 3 or 4 calls on Monday. Also got the political ruckus calling too.

i'm not sure if the UK has a service like this, but you can add yourself to the Do Not Call Registry if you live in the US. i added my home number, and i rarely get those kinds of calls now.

that's cool. i hate cold callers, especially when they ask me to confirm my details over the phone. my answer is always 'i have no idea who you are. you called me and so i assume you have any details of mine you need. if you have those details then read them out to me and i will tell you if they are correct.' they always say they can't because of the data protection act. i tell them my reason for not doing it is the same [:D]

i had one lady recently who asked me to confirm my details and when i said the above to her she said i knew perfectly well who they were because i'd had a letter from them. i'd had nothing so the convo went like this;

her- you do know who we are because we sent you a letter
me- i've had no such thing
her- yes you have
me- so you sent this by recorded delivery then did you? and i signed for it to prove it was delivered?
her- no, but we sent a letter
me- so what? i have had no letters from you, and still have no idea who you are. i'm not giving you my details. i'm now ending this call.
her- well we will just keep calling you
me- are these calls recorded?
her- yes
me- good. listen carefully. i do not appreciate being threatened with harassment at all. do not call me and harass me again. should you choose to do so i will report you to which ever body governs your company. i will report you for harassment, cold calling, and trying to gain personal information by intimidation. this is being recorded, as you have admitted, and so this call can be used as evidence against you, and the company you work for.

the line went dead. i've heard nothing from them since.

The UK has a service called The Telephone Preference Service. It's pretty good, but every now and then some unscrupulous shitbag of a company ignores it and calls me. Depending on my mood I will either:

(a) read out loud to them, from whichever book I have to hand, until they hang up.

(b) tell them I'm going to practice all my swear words right now, and if they don't want to be offended then they'd better hang up.

(c) put the phone in a drawer and forget about it. This usually ties the line up for several minutes so they can't call some other poor schmuck.

(d) sing to them. It has been said that I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, but what I lack in talent I make up for in exuberance and volume.

(e) try to sell them something. It really confuses them, although once I'm pretty sure I sold one cold caller a ride-on lawnmower.

(f) repeat back to them everything they say to me, including accent and intonation.

Well, why not have a little bit of fun with the few who refuse to follow the rules? [:D]

Just, ask them for their home # and tell them you will call them back.

The Do Not Call Registry works great for most calls, but not political calls :(

I started volunteering for political campaigns in 2006 and have been plagued with calls ever since. This cycle, I thank them for volunteering, tell them I am no longer living in Florida, politely ask to be removed from the database, and after 3 or 4 iterations, I think that has worked.

I'm going to look into getting a Google Voice # for the next time I volunteer.

I use the Do Not Call Registry and it has cut down on my calls...except for those Card Services @$$holes that SharharThorne mentioned.I've tried several things from screaming to rambling on about any silly random thought I might be having and they still keep calling.Reporting to the Registry hasn't helped either.I wonder if one of those freon can air horns for use on boats might be loud enough to get their attention? OMG bunny....those options are awesome, too [:)]

When I was living in the UK, whenever I got those calls I told them "fuck off" and hanged up...

I hate being impolite on the phone but quite frankly, I did not ask them to bother calling me so when you call me without my consent (in this case me not knowing you and wanting nothing from you) then you can't expect any friendly reply from me....just got too fed up of them.

Whilst I worked as a Nanny in the UK, ages ago, the mum in that family always loved it when they addressed her with the surname of her husband....cause she always kept her maiden name and so she made clear to them to not call her Mrs A when she has another surname and now to stop wasting her time, cause that's what they do, after all, when they don't even know her name.
