There was a 7.7 earthquake just off the British Columbia coast southwest of Prince Rupert.

There are tsunami warnings for the coastal areas of B.C., Alaska, and Hawai`i. There have been 2 tsunami warning sirens sounding off in the last 50 minutes, here on O`ahu. They expect it to reach here around 10:30 p.m. I do hope nothing significant happens in Hawai`i because there are so many low level regions that would be affected, including pretty much all of Waikiki which is in the tsunami evacuation zone.

Please get to high ground. The prediction is for a 3 to 7 foot tsunami hitting the islands.

Thanks for the concern DomKen, but I'm nowhere near the oceanfront where I live, so I'm well away from any danger zone.

They have closed entry to Waikiki so no one else can get in, only out.

The biggest power plant for the whole island is right on the ocean. I don't know what sort of protection, if any, it has, but if a tsunami hits, even a minor one, it's bound to be damaged. It is no fun living on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific without electricity. I feel for those on the east coast who may be affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Yeah, I agree kitkat...it's scary. The tsunami sirens are so eerie. I'm surprised they haven't sounded off again. The last one was almost an hour ago. Oh....I spoke too soon. It just started sounding. :(

You're on the coastline kitkat...there must be some sort of siren advisories where you are? Here they run them at 11:45 a.m. the first work day of the month. Most of the time I never hear the monthly test.


Waikiki beach right now...wonder what it will look like a couple of hours from now. Hopefully the same.

They are reporting on t.v. that it's not supposed to be a large damaging tsunami...nothing like what they had anticipated with the Japan earthquake (which ended up being pretty much nothing)...but...if even a little bit happens, there would be some damage.

No, there are no civilian nuclear plants in Hawaii. The only nuclear reactors in Hawaii are onboard the naval vessels.

It's comforting to know that Hawaii dodged a bullet again on this one, but the sobering truth is it's always just a matter of time. There are geological records of tsunamis that have carried coral boulders almost 1,000 feet up the mountainside of one of the islands. If there are still people living in Hawaii when the next one of those hits, there won't be many still living there a half hour afterward. Over 90% of the state's population lives below elevations that would be inundated by a wave of that height. The chances of anything like that happening in our lifetimes are extremely remote, but even short of that, just about any submarine quake anywhere on the Ring of Fire puts the state in considerable danger.

If you ever travel there, take note of the tsunami evacuation routes that you see designated all along the coastline. There's a reason they're there, and when the siren goes off, you really need to know which roads you're supposed to take inland, and which roads you're not.

Thankfully things are well in Hawai`i. The tsunami warning was removed in the wee hours here. From what I've found on the local news sites, there wasn't any damage, so it was less than the expected tsunami from the earthquake in Japan last year, where there was some damage in Kona on the Big Island from small tsunami waves and the Kahului Harbour in Maui.

I did hear on the news that had a tsunami taken place, we had a few hours warning, but we could be in a much different situation, should there be a major earthquake in the islands, which is very possible with the Big Island. I used to live there and experienced small tremors now and again. There was a fairly sizable quake just off the west coast of the Big Island a few years ago that affected not just the Big Island, but both Maui and O`ahu too...which are islands further west in the island chain. The guy on the news said if an earthquake hits the Big Island, we would have maybe 20 minutes to prepare.

Just to give you an idea, here is a picture of the largest electrical plant on O`ahu and how close it is to the ocean.

Eyes are now on the east coast. I do hope the best case scenario happens, given that it's evident a severe store, at a minimum, is expected. I am sending positive thoughts to those in the east.
