ORIGINAL: LonDom61 True, Desi. It`s not `the same thing`. But it has some similarities. And a comparison is...sorta funny. No, they don`t `have to` give out candy. But there`s the implicit threat of TPing their trees, soaping their windows, etc. if they don`t. Or if they`re grouches or something. Maybe that`s not common. Maybe doesn`t happen any more at all. But it is the `trick`part of `trick or treat`. Similar to, but smaller than, imprisonment for not paying your taxes. Like candy is similar to, but smaller than, your tax dollars. = = = Or how about kids feeling èntitled`to the candy. They dress up. They knock & say trick or treat. They get candy. They expect it. The system offers it, they hold out their goodie bags and voila. Similar to, but smaller than.... welfare, entitlement programs, etc Lighten up dude. But, again, if you choose to not participate, they don't even come to your door. And, when I was a kid (I really hate being able to say that), TP-ing and soaping were considered minor forms of vandalism. Sad, but true. quote:
ETA: Thought of a more serious ramification. Kids grow up programmed to expect Ì dress up and strangers give me candy`. It`s built in to the system. Then (SOME) grow up and it`s Ì fill out this form and strangers (the gov`t) give me money` I really hope that was sarcasm. If so, I laugh. If not, facepalm. lol quote:
PLEASE NOTE: I am not against all social programs. Neither do I support all social programs. I`ve seen people who need it, temporarily or permanently. But I`ve also seen what I see as abuse of the systems in place. Some big Jesuit once said, more or less, give me the child (til he`s 9 maybe)`. I`ll give you (ie control) the man`. We are, often and largely (but thank goodness not always & exclusively), the product of our early conditioning. Religion is early conditioning. Halloween is early conditioning. Maybe not such a frivolous example after all. Regardless of how some will treat me, or allege, I am not against all social programs, either. I recognize that there are people who need it, too. It's still a frivolous example, though. It's akin to blaming cartoon or video game violence on violent crime.
