I'm not going to say that I only care about their hearts and mind because it isn't true. I need a certain physicality to be sexually attracted. Friends are different.

I'm not going to date a dwarf because a guy under 6' doesn't turn me on.

With that said, everyone has issues. Everyone. And if they don't have them now, they will in a few more years.

1 in 6 women have been abused. 1 in 4 people have had an episode of depression. Look around you and your three best friends, one of you is or will be depressed and thus labeled as mentally ill.

What I care about is not so much if a person has issues but how they handle them. Taking your meds, doing your exercises, seeing your therapist is one thing. Someone who won't do the PT, won't take the meds, won't get mental health help - nope, I'm not going there. If you don't care enough to be the best person you can be, why should I?

both of my parents worked with PWDs when i was growing up, and my close friend is physically disabled. i love him to death, but i've been told i'm not his type :)

i've never dated someone with a physical disability and i'd never rule it out. i have dated scores of people with mental issues, most of whom are in denial about it. it doesn't bother me, as long as we can compromise and decide what's best for our relationship.

I am the first person to admit that most mental illness is a deal breaker for me. Not because of them, but because of me.

My adult daughter has struggled HUGELY with mental illness most of her life. My inability to fully understand, empathize and cope with her dramatic highs and lows, the problems she's gotten herself into due to her illness, etc etc etc.......tells me that I am not a good match for a person with her types of life challenges. She and I now have a very good relationship. But only because she lives an hour and a half away. There is NO WAY we could live in the same household and get along as well as we do today.
