FR In general, U.S. politics has been a two-party affair. Things were a bit more fluid before the Civil War, with Federalists waning, Whigs having their 15 or so years of fame, and the Republicans emerging (winning the White House for the first time in 1860). Since the war, it's been pretty much D vs. R, with the fascinating exception of 1912, when Theodore Roosevelt (disillusioned with his chosen successor, Taft, and keen to return to power) bolted the GOP and ran as a Progressive (aka Bull Moose). That split allowed Democrat Woodrow Wilson to take the lead.
