Congresswoman Accuses Obama Of ‘Harming’ Auto Company That Went Defunct In 1988

A Republican congresswoman accused the Obama administration of promulgating regulations that are undermining job creation at an auto manufacturer THAT HAS BEEN DEFUNCT SINCE 1988. She was responding to a question on Monday about Mitt Romney’s dishonest claims regarding Jeep moving its production overseas.

During an appearance on MSNBC, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) dodged a question about Romney’s debunked Jeep claims and instead attacked the Obama administration for issuing regulations that are harming workers at American Motors Corporation, a company once headed by George Romney. AMC was sold to Chrysler DURING THE RONALD REAGAN ADMINISTRATION and its brands were then discontinued.


In 1988, the year American Motors Corporation (AMC) went out of business, 26-year-old Barack Obama was in his first year of Harvard Law School and had just started dating Michelle Robinson, who would eventually become Mrs. Michelle Obama. And yet, according to Congresswoman Blackburn, he was, at the same time, creating federal government regulations that killed AMC.

Wow - talk about being able to multi-task...

Um Jeep was originally a Willys-Overland product.   Just sayin'.

So she put together some letters that can be tortured into a sort of sidelong non-sequitur, which in the rightwing parlance is reasoned debate and fact.

But I suppose when you consider the absolutely fantastic success that Obama has had making the Harley-Davidson company so wonderful..........you have a small point.

No, the engine was designed by Willys-Overland. The vehicle the Army used was a Ford known as the GPW. Willys bought the name and the trademark after the war.

The GPW was designed by Willys and made under contract by Ford.  Sort of like the headlight assemblies from an 88 CJF were also made from an International milk truck.

The singer sewing machine company made remington 1911A1s under contract in WWII, my father owned one as an army/air corps waistgunner and radioman in a B-17.

While the Army did buy a few Ford GP's the standardized model was the Willys MB. It was cheaper with a more powerful engine that the troops loved.
