If the core is heating the atmosphere it has to do it by heating the basalt which would heat the atmosphere by radiation.

Is that so?

So the water in a pan on a fire is heated by the bottom of the pan radiating heat into the water?

My, my.

This is getting tiresome
You made this wrong claim
quote:

Umm, because? Because it is not basalt radiation that is the dominant process, but magma convection currents?

And you respond to my correcting you with this bullshit.

If this is simply you get off on being humiliated online why not start another circumcision thread and leave serious discussion to others?

I notice that you did not anwer my question. (The answer is "No".)

It is good that you have an interest in the sciences, DomKen. But you would do well to stay away from controversial subjects.

Ok then precisely what process do you claim transmits the thermal energy from the core to the atmosphere?

Convection currents in the mantle, conduction in the crust and convection currents in the atmosphere. (Conduction from the bottom and convection currents in a pan of water are what is making the water in the pan boil; radiation is but an insignificant fraction of that process, I intuite.)

So the basalt still has to be much hotter than the atmosphere to conduct enough heat to raise the temp to 400+C in an atmosphere 93 times as dense as Earth.

It isn't so you're still fucking wrong. The planet's atmosphere traps almost all the received solar energy it receives due to the GHG in the atmosphere.

You are lying and telling the opposite of the truth, putting words in my mouth that are the opposite of what I said. postulating that I am ignorant when I use YOUR reference to prove that THEY support what I said.

I am done with you.

I quote from here:

quote:

Venus’ orbit is approximately 70% closer to the sun, which means it receives about 1/0.72 ~ 2 times more solar insolation at the top of the atmosphere than Earth. Venus also has a very high albedo which ends up over-compensating for the distance to the sun, so the absorbed solar energy by Venus is less than that for Earth. The high albedo can be attributed to a host of gaseous sulfur species, along with what water there is, which provide fodder for several globally encircling sulfuric acid (H2SO4) cloud decks. SO2 and H2O are the gaseous precursor of the clouds particles; the lower clouds are formed by condensation of H2SO4 vapor, with SO2 created by photochemistry in the upper clouds. Venus’ atmosphere also has a pressure of ~92 bars, nearly equivalent to what you’d feel swimming under a kilometer of ocean. The dense atmosphere could keep the albedo well above Earth’s even without clouds due to the high Rayleigh scattering [snip]. Less than 10% of the incident solar radiation reaches the surface.

Note that the sulfur in the atmosphere indicates active volcanism.

So less than ten percent of sunlight reaches the surface, where the atmosphere temperature happens to be the hottest. And the infrared image of Venus - representing temperature at the top of the atmosphere - is cooler than the infrared signature of Mars. Between such temperature differences convection currents will occur, transporting heat from the surface to space, including the 90 % of the energy of the solar radiation that does not reach the surface.

Whereas hundred % of all the solar radiation that is not reflected back into space by clouds, reaches the surface of the Earth, so the temperature of the atmosphere at the surface of Venus ought to be at least ten times colder than here on Earth, if it simply is the solar radiation that heats the atmosphere at ground level.

We know that heat is transported from the surface into space. That is elementary physics: heat is transported down the temperature incline; never up, unless there is some pump - but such a pump will transport more heat down the temperature incline than up. That is inherent in the laws of entropy.

So from first principles it is immediately clear that this Green House Gasses scenario is wrong and nothing but a feeble attempt to explain the high temperatures of the atmosphere at the planet's surface. Venus is not a black hole sucking energy in.

The energy that is heating the atmosphere comes from within.

90% of the sunlight that reaches Venus is absorbed by the atmosphere by your own link. What do you think that means?

Also stop using climate denial liars as sources. It is annoying to have to triple check every fact to find the ones they're lying about.

That it must be pretty cold at the surface.

Which of the assertions in my quote did they lie about?
