I hate to say it... no wait, I LOVE saying it...
An American Voter who thinks they get to pick the next President is like a Good Catholic who thinks they get to pick the next Pope.
Look, obviously the people who are a part of the electoral college have a very good gig and they want to stay right where they are. If you go against the voters too much then you're risking your own job security by doing so, so it's not all that often that it happens. But this crazy idea that any one regular persons vote is ever going to make that swing... the only way that could happen is if it's a dead tie with only one member of the college remaining to cast a vote and that person is waffling and inclined to wait for the voters in their district, who would also have to be in an absolute down to the last vote tie. Is it possible... yes, but only barely more likely than I am to be struck down by lightening for blaspheming the good old USA by actually knowing how my government works and saying so out loud on a public forum.
...
Nope, no lightening, and I'm not gonna hold my breath for the day a single vote will ever count. Majority rules, but in this case the majority is that of the representatives of the electoral college, not the people.
Sorry to snark, but this KILLS me. It's the election year IRL version of Who's Smarter Than A 5th Grader. The popular vote is a dog and pony show... google it, ask FOX news and NPR or ask any fifth grader you know who's taking social studies right now. Why does everyone in the world except the people doing the voting know this? You do have a say in who represents you, and in your local laws, though I'd read what they actually state before I voted for anything, the fine print is always... interesting. I'm about to go off on a rant about voter responsibility and that's no good. So instead I'm going to just shake my head and go pour some cocoa, pet my cat and not go there more. Sorry for even letting that be a topic.

MICKEY FOR PRESIDENT... because the White House needs mice?
See... I'm better with funny than ranty true things people don't like to hear. MMMmmm cocoa.

Off topic, but lady you have the most negative demanding profile I think I have read in my years here. Holy fucking negativity.

Any idiot catholic knows that the college of cardinals selects a pope. American voters are constantly beaten over the head with the ideal that the "power of the vote" isn't a romantic anachronism.

Unfortunately, there's no way to know if the EC is legit or not but, I do believe with all our technology, it's no longer needed. We can count the general ballots in less time than our fore-fathers could count the EC votes (including travel time, obviously).

Peace and comfort,

Michael

LOL, yeah, being on this site has had a surprisingly nasty effect on my attitude towards people in general, but this is not the forum for that (we can start a complain about the wankers thread sometime and I'll copy the funnier parts of the six hundred emails I got in my 1st 48 hrs here... there's one about a donut and a sea cow, and I think I have something like forty pages of just swearing, or things that begin with swearing and contain a lot of it anyway). I wouldn't be here if it weren't for some of the funnier threads and a couple IRL friends it's easier to catch here. I don't find much of what I was looking for here, but there are some diamonds in the dirt.
Of course demanding is a matter of perspective, why would I want less than what actually makes me happy when I know I have more to offer in return than most people expect? I make zero apologies for who I am or what I want and I do expect an even trade as far as relationships go.
We can sit and drink my favorite eighteen year old scotch and you can tell me all about what I'm doing wrong with my life. Somehow, I don't think being agro on this site, and with fairly good reason overall, is going to really effect any part of my life... though it does occasionally make me a like minded friend, and I've got some absolutely hysterical hate mail.
Do you really care if someone as 'demanding' as I am, spends her downtime being bored in low tech nowhere-ville and shopping for the ever elusive perfect match between business projects?
Everyone is an asshole from someone's perspective... you seem like a nice enough person, and we don't need to agree or like what the other says, that's the beauty of the internet. For my part, those 'demands,' honey those are the bare minimum I expect in a partner. I'm not for everyone. I'd rather please the right one for me than try and keep everyone happy.
I'm not sure what you were expecting.

However to bring us back to the topic at hand, here's another surprise. I can't find the damn link to the mickey mouse write in campaign stuff. If I ever do I'll post it but for now I'll rescind the claim until I have some evidence. Still for a good chuckle you can google mickey mouse election and see... oh about ten million results come up.

And if you want it:
http://www.independentpoliticalreport.com/2009/08/fec-releases-official-popular-vote-count-from-2008-presidential-election/
this is just an election results link for '08, but the part that got me (mickey only got 11 votes last time apparently) is the thirteen people who voted for themselves. (Presumably, or some random person they know)
In the whole country I think I'd have expected more. I was also surprised to see there wasn't a single vote for Voldemort... and there were campaign stickers everywhere for him. I laughed my butt off the first time I saw one.

If one is going to do that what they would do is vote for Roseanne over Willard.  There is a case of prima facie built in failure.

Sorry to snark

I'm sorry to say that I just don't believe that, Nochoiceleft. On first impression, I've come to quite the opposite conclusion.

California assigns the electoral votes on "winner take all." We have 55 of them. In the unlikely event that the popular vote of the state came out to a tie, yes, that guy who decided to never cast a vote for Al Gore, before he ever even had a vote, would make the difference. Obviously, someone who reads for the idea contained in a post would assume the writer took 6th grade civics as well, and was referring to their role in the total process, but not everybody reads that way.

Good luck in your quest for whatever it is on the site, and welcome to the forums.

I'd have guessed some type of surgery myself... Macadamia nuts aren't exactly healthy, or slimming.

i predict she will be blamed by whatever side loses. like ralph nader was when gore lost, even though the man couldn't manage to carry his own state!

Really?
And there was me thinking that one was because the recount in Florida was illegally stopped, rather than anything to do with Nader's attention seeking.
