http://finance.yahoo.com/news/health-law-spurs-shift-hours-022100532.html

Seems like, as predicted, that business is eliminating employee healthcare after all. All they had to do was reduce the hours of their employees and shift the burden for payment of healthcare to the individual.

Lucylastic -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 6:45:06 PM)

I hope you realise that THAT has been going on for YEARS. It started after the union busting and is RAMPANT in the hospitality, tourism, and retail system.

KenDckey -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 6:48:21 PM)

Oh I know Lucy. I just wanted to point it out once again to the more liberal side that thinks that Obamacare is the panacea that will correct all our ills.

tazzygirl -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 6:51:25 PM)

Darden, one of the businesses who are cutting back, offer a Day One Insurance policy.... which isnt crap.

3000 a year limit, and thats after the payout of your own pocket.
Reimbursement for meds... ahem... who can afford that?
50% dental...

Its a policy for the young and stupid. Having to fight the insurance companies for the money owned to employees is a bitch. I have been there.

Lucylastic -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 7:00:24 PM)

I sure hope Obama brings out single payer system soon:)

tazzygirl -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 7:06:55 PM)

Oh I do too. But at least we are moving in the right direction. If employers drop insurance.... what happens to the insurance companies? Following?

KenDckey -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 7:14:07 PM)

The insurance companies get their money from the employee that Obamacare had a direct cause in reducing their pay.

They find another way to rape their customers ?

tazzygirl -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 7:19:45 PM)

Many of the smaller companies will go out of business or be bought up by the larger ones. Its just the first step.

I think I know what you are implying... but.. I would rather you lay it out.

How is pay being reduced?

KenDckey -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 7:30:48 PM)

Tazzy If a person is working 40 hr a week and has a healthcare benefit and is then reduced to 30 hrs per week so the employer doesn't have to pay for the benefit, then the employee looses 10 hrs a week pay plus he is required by Obama care to pay for his/her health insurance. I just looked at what mine would cost from my former employer. Is $822 a month. My former employer is a govt entity in CA with approximately 3500 employees. I opted out of having to pay for that entities healthcare and made other arrangements. At that I still have to pay health insurance costs even tho my alternate is a different govt entity. Yes I am retired from 2 different govt entities.

BTW my retirement from the former entity is only about $15 more than the cost of health insurance so I would have to survive on $15 a month if that were my only income.

They certainly do, Mike. They get to rape the customer via Government mandate/tax. Remember, citizens are required to purchase insurance?

And those employees would be eligible for assistance because of the percentage above poverty that they are working at.

Starting in 2014, most people who are uninsured or buying individual insurance with incomes up to four times the poverty level ($92,200 for a family of four and $44,680 for a single person in 2012) will be eligible for expanded coverage through Medicaid or tax credits to subsidize the cost of private insurance.

http://healthreform.kff.org/coverage-expansion-map.aspx

Key Federal Provisions
The 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) expands Medicaid to all Americans under age 65 whose family income is at or below 133 percent of federal poverty guidelines ($14,484 for an individual and $29,726 for a family of four in 2011) by Jan. 1, 2014. Childless adults will make up a large percentage of this newly eligible population. Full federal financing (100 percent Federal Medical Assistance Percentages) will be available for those newly eligible for Medicaid for three years (2014 to 2016). The Federal Medical Assistance Percentage falls to 95 percent in 2017, 94 percent in 2018, 93 percent in 2019, and 90 percent in 2020 and beyond; states pick up the balance.

Know what all that says? It says that Obamacare is going to cost more and more and more.

tazzygirl -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 8:03:54 PM)

In your world, yes.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 8:09:06 PM)

He ain't gonna read that tazzy. They are stuck in their ideas and nothing is going to get them off of it.

tazzygirl -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 8:17:48 PM)

I know, which is why I didnt bother with more than that. Anyone who cant wrap their mind around the concept that prevention is cheaper than curative isnt worth talking too about health insurance.

Aswad -> RE: Doing Away With Employer Healthcare (11/5/2012 8:29:44 PM)

~fr~

Universal healthcare, almost universally, more than pays for itself in the long run.

May I suggest the skeptics have a look at what this shit can be like, for less than you currently spend (link)?

An American viewer would get a fairly accurate impression of Norway from that video, although it covers other issues than healthcare, too; and we're doing quite fine "despite" (indeed, because of, going by the numbers) things like universal healthcare and extensive welfare. It is the case that our surplus has grown faster than the US deficit, per capita. The fact of the matter is, it works, but it takes some time to implement things. Universal healthcare is a key enabler of such improvements in society.

If the USA would implement something similar, step by step, that would become a pretty damn utopian place, without some of the drawbacks we have up here (cultural issues not present in the USA). And to those worried about people growing soft or lax, that doesn't seem to happen in any of the countries that have stuck with the Nordic model. Indeed, most people do whatever they can to avoid welfare, and crime isn't the least bit appealing for the vast majority of citizens. Note that we spend 30% more per capita on welfare to achieve what you see in that clip, and far less per capita on police, prisons, courts, healthcare and the like, so it's just a shuffling of money in the budgets to get more for less, not a question of throwing more money at people.

Incidentally, the system works fine in the other Nordic countries, which lack our substantial oil income.

Also, our beurocracy has always been huge by any metric, even before we introduced these things, so you'd spend less to achieve the same.

IWYW,
— Aswad.

Who says that those who will be new additions to the subsidized receivers will go for the preventive care? Where is the incentive for that?

In case you haven't noticed, it's an awful lot easier to waste someone else's money than it is to spend your own. Putting your wallet on the line will tend to lead to more financially conservative choices. If it's not your money, the choices will tend to be less financially conservative.
