I see two possibilities.

1) Irrelevancy. Remain an essentially white rural low education party. Keep fighting the culture war and embrace the religious right ever tighter. In a decade or so be unable to maintain power even with extremely partisan redistrictings.

2) Move into the 21st century. Embrace socially moderate policies. Drop the xenophobic policies and politicians. Reach out to the hispanic community in a real way not just fairly transparent tokenism.

What is startling to me is how little the Republican party changed after the disaster: economic and foreign policy -- of the Bush Administration. From 2008-12 it doubled down on those failed policies, and it still controls the House of Representatives.

If anything, the Democratic Party should be concerned. It is approaching monolithic status in terms of its support not just from blacks, but also from latinos, gays, and women. Monoliths have a way of crumbling to the ground. The GOP just has to do some minor tinkering. Obama barely carried the swing states and he is still saddled with a GOP house.

Yeah, those monoliths when they are buildings..........but 'arf a mo guv, take a peek at the colosseum, or the tower of london, or the flying buttressed churches of christopher wren's building spree and I could continue on to the great wall of china and a couple other places and......

Try for something apt in a jingo. It only hurts yourself to engage in such sub-par and inchoate hyperbole.

Lol,it's a good thing you are a humble guy

The Republican Party will probably stumble around in the political wilderness(nationally speaking) for another cycle or two.
They are already,if right wing talk show wing nuts can be heeded,suggesting that this loss was due to a lack of purity as to their conservatism.
In other words they believe they must move further right in order to win ....which dooms them to that wilderness

When they get sick of that they just might jettison the fringe of their party and move back a bit to the center.
That's my take,for what it is worth.....certainly worth more than some other humble opinions

Minor tinkering,is that what they call losing by over 100 electoral votes, and dropping the teabaggers who they gave millions to?

Well keep that train of thought and soon no one will know who the gop was, they will be gone with the likes of brown akin, cain and all the rest..

Hmmm. a billion spent by the GOP, 34.5 million by 1 guy and not one of his chosen won...what can't take a hint or is the denial that deep??? The old white power lust is over, women have a voice, as do blacks, Latinos and gays...get on board or be a thing 0f the past.

Chris Christie will be the nominee in 2016, for better or worse... But you guys can hardly beat on him after his Obama bear hug, and leadership during Sandy.

Christie not only threw Romney under the bus last week, but he's set himself up as the guy who is PROVEN to work with the opposition for the good of his state... Kinda hard to run against that, especially when the Obamacare taxes kick in in 14, and the middle class disappears itno the permanent welfare class, and part time jobs are considered careers.

they are not going to be more liberal than the democrats.....embracing democrat policies, willing to cross the aisle has not yet worked....The republican strike a deal to any of that with obama n the senate? bye bye repubicans....for your life time and your kids life time....the majority the democrats will look more like california than 2008-2010....understanding their is not one republican in power in california.
and when that happens. it will be a two party system on paper only......

Wow subrob, it sucks to be you, with the mindset you have. (disappears into the permanent welfare class? As if republicans don't lose their jobs, too and fall into that category?)

If Congress was willing to put aside their malice towards making our current president a one term president we might have seen more politicians like Christie. Christie is doing his job as a governor, and for the sake of his people, worked with who he had to work with to help his state. If only Congress felt that way for the sake of our country, more independents would have been willing to vote republican.

If ever Congress does take that attitude, I think solutions will be found, instead of screwing their own country. Part time jobs may indeed turn to full time jobs (careers) with benefits and even insurance to go with it, but I've lost faith in Congress. Congress thru this whole country under the bus for the sake of ruining and getting rid of one man. And if you were honest with yourself, you would see the numbers start to turn around. And those numbers that are starting to improve???...that one man they were trying to get rid of accomplished that without them to spite it all.

Christie is politcally dead. He has no chance to win reelection.....less chance the repubicans have to outspend dems.

I wouldn't be too quick to proclaim the Republican Party dead or irrelevant. Why? Because the Republicans said the same thing about the Democrats after Bush defeated Kerry.

They do need to move more to the center though and rid themselves of the extremist part of their party.

Mitch McConnell just said that it's now Obama's job to put legislation before the house that Republicans would be willing to pass.

but the dems werent talking the same way the repubs are now talking being told to talk by the opposition. not even before....never...
if the republicans try to match liberlism with dems, they are dead finished for the lifetime of the youngest member of this board.

they said the same thing after obama care, the bailouts, and almost everything that obama should have been plastered with daily on the campaign trail...never saw the light of day....Its to late for mconnell to talk like that...or to early......

I agree with your cycle or two comment as relates to the presidential race since certainly the Dems are going to offer up yet another historical nominee in Hillary Clinton that all those with sexist monkeys on their back will hope to throw them off the same way that they delusionally hoped to get the racist monkey off. After that though, one-trick ponies will all be out of their stables and the GOP will no longer have to content itself with controlling the House.
