anythings better than USA Today

You obviously don't read it. The fact is, its a decent - to good newspaper. Its very centrist and it strives to be balanced. It always has three to five good articles on either news, business, sports, or the arts that are worth reading. Its OP-ED page is very middle of the road. Also, its not littered with advertising.

It may not compare with the Washington Post or the NYT, but that's an apples to oranges comparison. I would rate it higher that the BAL SUN.

Kana -> RE: USA Today (11/8/2012 6:45:20 PM)

Well, the paper that lines my litter boxes is better than the Sun so that's not saying much. Tragically though, I just got back from a business trip where I was stranded in a hotel for 2 weeks and USAtoday was the house paper. It was never that great, but it's gone waaaaaaaaaay downhill to the point where it's a slight improvement on TP, but not much.

What funny is that USA TODAY has slid in quality over the last two years. Newpapers just aren't generating the revenue top print quality content.

Fiscal Responsibility means cutting the defense budget

This is a bold assumption and not necessarily true. Properly funding our defense would be the choice of the majority of Americans. Even if that meant war bonds and tax increases. Only a few fanatics on the far left would arbitrarily cut the defense budget.... We've too many enemies. You will not see even a Democratically dominated Congress slash the defense budget in this world climate.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking all…even the majority of Democrats…do not want, demand, and believe in a strong military.

Butch

Where are you, mentally? In 1948 or 1958?

To the contrary there were even a few Republican congressman and more than a few Republican voters who were completely against the invasions in the early part of the century.

Why does this need to keep being repeated?

If you don't like enemies, then quit committing actions that create more of them (such as invasions of countries presenting no realistic threat to the US, nor in any practical sense to anyone else).

If you don't like poor people, then quit enacting laws and having policies that create more of them.

At the least, that would make for more cost effective government. The deficit would be far less than what it is now if we had the least bit of common sense.

Apparently it has escaped your notice, but the US has not done anything honestly 'in defense' for ages. It's been all about aggression, and making a pile of new enemies for some many years now.

Damn right we should cut any budgeting for that which continually worsens the US' standing in the world, and socks us with mountains of debt, which foreigners have to finance a large portion of.

Just how could any of that be considered as being for the security of the nation?

Quite the contrary.

Well perhaps not. But this somewhat democrat and definitely fiscal conservative has to just look at spending numbers in that category which are literally off the charts compared to the entire rest of the globe and ask a few questions.

Honestly my personal assessment is that we'd have way fewer enemies if we had way fewer tanks. And even were that not true we are literally bankrupting ourselves to fund that sort of military posture. We cannot keep it up without conquering someone and stealing their money (which would then justify those tanks, right? They paid for themselves by killing people and taking their shit).

When you're talking about a country which spends as much as the next five nearest competitors combined on it's military it becomes difficult to justify the word "defense".

Ditto

kdsub -> RE: USA Today (11/9/2012 8:46:58 AM)

Jeff I think you missed the part where I agree with you... We need to amass the type of military we have when we decided to be the leader in defending the free world. You cannot blame the military in wanting to meet that obligation with equipment and training that would allow overwhelming force. This saves lives…how much is your son or daughter worth? I want mine to have the best with the greatest chance of surviving.

Now… we would not need the military we have if the rest of the western world would contribute their fair share. Then we could cut our budget and modernize our infrastructure and have money left over for health care and other entitlements.

For any sane European, their FAIR share of American world dominance is ZERO, if not even negative.

When it comes time to stop complaining, the conservative posters here tend to go silent. What positive things do conservatives want the REP party to do given the makeup of United States as it is and the 2012 election result?

All I hear are crickets. When you can't make derogatory remarks about Obama, when you can't complain about "socialism," when you can't rail against Benghazi, when you can't blame the economy on the White House, when you can't push for more deportations and a fence between the USA and Mexico, what do you have left to say?

Well they could take a page out of your book and just start endlessly complaining out how evil the other side is and how superior you are by comparison.
