DarkSteven -> Demonization. (11/8/2012 7:19:55 PM)

One of the things that's concerning me is demonization. Hyperbole.

It's not enough to say that Obama is a bad President. He's the worst President we've ever had, a Muslim socialist who's bent on destroying the country.

It's not enough to say that Romney is a turkey. He will bankrupt the economy, start wars with Middle Eastern countries, and deport all Mexicans.

The worse you can demonize your opponent, the more donations you can get...

Well Citizen Steven, I recall another fellow who was very good at the same thing: Robespierre.

Poimt being, it is not a new tactic.

I think were taking about character assassination and personal attacks....

Not political hyperbole......

tazzygirl -> RE: Demonization. (11/8/2012 7:57:00 PM)

I would consider those personal attacks and character assassinations. How many times have we seen it on these boards alone? If you want to poke at the other guy, be prepared to know what your own party is doing.

Both sides did it this election season.

flyhumbleguy -> RE: Demonization. (11/8/2012 8:29:16 PM)

These types of messages will resonate with some parts of the electorate...always have and will continue to do so. Then other types of messages will resonate with other parts of the electorate. If you're not hearing these types of messages in each election, then the campaign staff probably isn't doing its job fully.

These boards don`t count as the real world.....and you`re way more fair,civil,honest and principled than the average Joe...

Maybe that is the point, perhaps people should attempt to be better people? I don't assume people who believe things I don't are evil.. they just don't agree with how I see things. In the end I think we all want the same things we just don't always agree on how to get there.

Comeon DS, it was a 4 year policy from the right to demonize President Obama from the time he was elected. Mr. Romney had every chance to lower the tone last year in the republican debates but failed to do that. Do you suppose pointing out some of his policy failings is similar to personal attacks?

Yachtie -> RE: Demonization. (11/9/2012 5:46:32 AM)

The Right demonized Obama from the start. That was to be expected knowing Obamacare was to be on the table. Had Romney won does anyone really believe the Left would not be after him?

What I find so astounding comes from another angle. The Right's demonetization of Ron Paul to the eventual exclusion of him at the RNC convention. The Paul vid they showed was a whitewash.

Gutter politics is not new, just the language may have changed a bit.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Demonization. (11/9/2012 5:49:18 AM)

The question is why the right went for the demonization rather than go against the policy? Truly what did it gain?

Good point. There's a line between saying "We cannot afford the ACA" and saying "It is the most blatantly socialist policy ever passed", and I don't know where that line gets drawn.

Perhaps it has more to do with Reality TV than we think. People like to be entertained. Demonetization is way far better entertainment than the drudgery of facts and figures one gets from dry college lectures.

Both sides did it. What would have made it better would have been if they all wore 'tribal' buffs[8D]

PeonForHer -> RE: Demonization. (11/9/2012 6:10:33 AM)

FR

I can't see that there's going to be any other result once politics stops being about policies and starts being about personalities. There'll only be heroes and villains and saints and demons.

cloudboy -> RE: Demonization. (11/9/2012 6:15:19 AM)

You are seeking answers from a box or rocks. I'm still waiting for a conservative here to go deeper on the issues, and it hasn't happened.
