I think its pretty clear... When the Whigs dissolved, many went back into the Democrat Party in hopes their voices would be heard and effect change from within. Other Whigs joined and help set the foundation of the Republican Party

The whig party was whole cloth absorbed into the republican party to sdoften thier rabid moralistic religious edge, but now they are bleeding back out of their party.
