Staffers working for the Romney 2012 campaign got a sudden and unwelcome lesson in fiscal conservatism Tuesday night and Wednesday morning when they tried to check out of hotel rooms or travel home. According to NBC’s “First Read” blog, campaign workers were left to pull themselves up by their bootstraps when they found that all the credit cards issued by Romney/Ryan 2012 were canceled as soon as the nominee finished his concession speech.

“From the moment Mitt Romney stepped off stage Tuesday night, having just delivered a brief concession speech he wrote only that evening, the massive infrastructure surrounding his campaign quickly began to disassemble itself,” wrote NBC’s Garrett Haake. “Aides taking cabs home late that night got rude awakenings when they found the credit cards linked to the campaign no longer worked.”

Forbes magazine explained that this is not normal protocol for political campaigns.

“In case you are wondering, this did not have to happen,” wrote columnist Helaine Olen. “The Mitt Romney for President entity does not end with Romney’s Tuesday night loss. There are papers to be filed with various federal commissions and bills to be paid.”

Romney/Ryan 2012 is expected to be an extant business entity for years to come. In 2010, Hillary Clinton’s campaign was still soliciting donations to retire the last $771,000 of the $5.9 million debt it accrued in the bruising 2008 Democratic primary fight.

Ohhhhhhhhh.... That explains why my neighbor Jack was so fucking mad Wednesday. HEe was all flipped out about having to drive in to the expo center and get his son John who was a "youth leader" in Young Vultures For Romney or whatever they called it. Anyway, he was stuck retrieving his kid in the wee hours of Wednesday. I'll bet that had something to do with it.
That is REALLY TACKY ... The south end is no place for teenage boys to be roaming around at 2am.

PeonForHer -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:01:12 PM)

What are those Romney workers complaining about? Bloody communists.

FMRFGOPGAL -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:01:20 PM)

Romney marketed himself as a businessman. He was mere;y being true to his nature. None of  those people were profitable anymore.

slvemike4u -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:06:03 PM)

perhaps the positions were "outsourced"

DomKen -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:06:23 PM)

I wonder what their contracts specified.

tazzygirl -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:10:38 PM)

I gotta ask.... how many credit cards does a campaign give out and just how fast can they all be cancelled?

slvemike4u -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:12:36 PM)

Perhaps the were cancelled by "robocall"
Certainly that would speed up the process,no matter how many cards [:)]

tazzygirl -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:18:51 PM)

I just cant pass this off, guys. These people did work hard for what they believed in.. and were treated like shit in the end.

And before some jumps and says this is a GOP bashing thread, I would feel the same way if this was Obama.

LaTigresse -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:21:41 PM)

I agree.

And it's not like he didn't have the money to cover it.

As many as they need, and with one email to the VIP section.

dcnovice -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 8:32:46 PM)

FR

Perhaps Romney needed the money for the fireworks?

Then what was the rush? Checking out of hotel rooms and getting cabs home after work.... talk about "being fired".

Personally, I would sue his campaign just for reimbursement of an authorized trip in regards to the hotel rooms.

Precisely. Talk about "wham bam thank you, ma'am".

erieangel -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 9:08:45 PM)

Tacky.

Of course, given that it is Romney who once declared "I like to fire people", I'm not at all surprised.

Oh and I agree with Tazzy, I'd feel the same had it been Obama.

If it happened to enough people, I should think they could pool together and have a case.

TheHeretic -> RE: Tacky! (11/9/2012 9:43:47 PM)

I've heard of such things before. I've also heard of full-time campaign workers, in both parties, whose last paycheck bounces, because the account was closed.

With what I've learned about Mitt Romney over this campaign, I suspect he will make this right, in terms of reimbursing expenses, pretty quickly, and with what I've come t expect from our media, we won't hear a thing when he does.

I think "cockup," describes it better than "tacky."

I'll tell you this much Mike... we won't be seeing the piece Tazzy found on the Today Show. I am surprised that one didn't show up in my inbox... I need to think about becoming a switch so I can beat my interns[:D]

That would be more comfortable, calling it a mistake as opposed to a firesale at the expense of those who'd given  so much.
   I've been both an employee and an "expensed volunteer" for two major democratic campaigns, and it hasn't happened to me. Course, they were Democratic campaigns.
