If you’re going to “go Galt,” now really is an excellent time to do it. Please, go Galt! We want you to go Galt. It’s probably best for everyone if you do go Galt. I feel compelled to warn you, however, that as you don’t actually live in an Ayn Rand novel, your self-deportation to the Galt’s Gulch of your choice will not, in fact, collapse society into a wailing socialist pancake of misery. What will happen is that someone else in our nation of 300-some-odd million will slot into your position, albeit with probably less strident personal politics, and things will go on more or less as they did before. This is something Ayn Rand got wrong.

Not from Scalzi's article but wonderfully relevant is this quote from John Rogers:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

My favorite responses to the article:

David says:

rainbow coalition of gays, women and minorities is not coming to your door to take your guns or your freedom

Yes, we are. But in return we will be giving you the briefing book on sharia law and how to follow it, and the booklet How To Be A Good Socialist Worker For The Benefit Of The Homeland.

Bob says:

98% of the people who threaten to go Galt would not be missed. In that regard, it’s the Objectivist version of the Rapture.

John Scalzi says:

“Objectivist Rapture” is the name of my next band.

I'd forgotten this favorite quote. Thanks, Stef!

Can we have a new rule here on CM that everyone who threatens to "go Galt" and fails to do so within a month of the threat gives $10 to all the posters who scoffed at their threat?

That's the only way I can think of that might make us take threats to "go Galt" seriously.

Nope. The conservatives' latest explanation for their loss is that the liberal Dems have created an army of zombies dependent on welfare and entitlements (i.e., things and stuff) to never work again. They just can't deal with the fact that their platform is not winning, and in a democracy, that means being on the outs. Despite Trump's ranting about democracy being that Trump always gets his way.

Yupper.....

Wasn`t their fault.....they`re so scary neat-o awesome,it was everyone else`s failure.Wasn`t that Mitt wasn`t good enought for America.....It`s(after Mitt`s utter rejection)that America is not good enough for them....so fuck America.

It`s a little like the creepy guy, who after getting rejected by someone he really wanted bad, won`t man up and move on but instead tells people that it was SHE that was no-good and that he rejected her....for HER failings...

Only narcissists ,could twist things all around and come with labeling over half the nation as morally weak and lazy ,instead of looking inward. .

It is not just "rainbow coalition": President Barack Obama was favored over multimillionaire businessman Mitt Romney in eight of the nation's 10 wealthiest counties.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/obama-wins-8-10-wealthiest-154837437.html

Obama is a brand like Kardashians; Citizens of the United States of Entertainment favor brands. Stalin would have won landslide victory in Soviet Russia if they had US style elections.

The implication in your post is that the wealthiest are the most gullible to "branding politics," but further, that the wealthiest are the most easily sold on this particular brand.

Methinks this is not reality.

All politics in this country has become "branding politics," but people generally vote either for or against a proposed reality.

The GW brand sold well because the media really took to his "I got a twelve-pack in the fridge, you want one?" persona. Who cares what he was actually about to do.

Ever since Reagan, the media have been obsessed with the branding aspect, above all else, and all that follow are measured in relation the branding gold standard he set.
