I wouldnt doubt it, unless Tim Duncan finds the fountain of youth.

They had to put the bat signal out. Except it was a huge triangle. I don't know why it fell through but this coach better win his ass off. With Phil they would have had 3 more years of competing and maybe even another 3 peat. I doubt coby will play more than another 3 or 4 years.

Nash and Bryant fit with D'Antoni's run and gun, but Howard & Gasol might have problems.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Lakers hire Mike D'Antoni (11/12/2012 7:25:31 PM)

The prob is that D'Antoni hasn't ever coached Defense. You cant win a ring without playing D.

LevelTx -> RE: Lakers hire Mike D'Antoni (11/12/2012 7:30:49 PM)

True, he's the June Jones of hoops.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Lakers hire Mike D'Antoni (11/12/2012 7:31:57 PM)

His teams will average 110 points/game.............and give up 111

Level, Thank you for starting this thread.

This is a mistake by the Lakers.

D'Antoni is not a championship level coach.  In Phoenix
his teams would make critical mistakes in big moments because
they were not prepared.

This is what Jalen Rose, one of his players, had to say comparing
him to Rick Carlsile of the Mavericks.

Speculation:

Jimmy Buss is the son attempting to take control of the team. There are rumors about
the state of his father's (Jerry Buss) health.  When Phil left there was a wholesale
firing of all the staff except for Mitch Kupchack.

When Jerry West was still there there were rumors that he and Phil Jackson had
power issues.  Player choices, contracts, etc.  So Jimmy Buss did not want Jackson back.

Furthermore there are rumors about the health of Jerry Buss.  So if/when Jimmy does
inherit the team, which is the family business, there is the issue of his sister Jennie Buss
who is in a relationship with Phil Jackson.  So who would get her vote?

In addition to the health speculation for Jerry Buss there is the fact that Howard is a
free agent at the end of this year.  In the meantime the Clippers with Chris Paul and
Blake Griffin are looking better and better.

So the Lakers with an inexperienced non basketball mind at the helm are under enormous
pressure to win right now.  It should be interesting.

I think they will look good.  They will play a lot of entertaining basketball. Then they will
get beat in the playoffs by a better "TEAM".

Buss family politics is something I've been thinking about, and how it may have played into the process; I really think they let a golden opportunity slip away.

Everybody better watch out for Carmelo Anthony on the NY Knicks! He is playing defense now.

Kobe is so self-absorded. I am sick of him.

The Heat? Just not into them. That whole press conference team switch with Lebron James was a stab in the back to his prior team. But I understan he is a good person... Lebron.

He looks like a line-backer.

What the Lakers did to Phil Jackson was wrong and rude. They have no respect for his past hard work.

Kobe is such an attitude problem. He would have beef with any coach.

FreeFromSin -> RE: Lakers hire Mike D'Antoni (11/26/2012 4:24:12 AM)

That Lakers are not a team. They have Howard and Gasol but they are taking their 7 ft'er for granted (Pau).

Kobe runs the Lakers. Everybody knows he acts like the coach, now.

What Kobe says, goes. Metta World Peace and the previous player Kobe dissed in the press, that played back in '08, described Kobe as not a good person, not a good team-member...having a chip on his shoulder and acting superior to everybody else. His attitude will be their downfall.

Nobody wants to work with an a-hole.

FreeFromSin -> RE: Lakers hire Mike D'Antoni (11/26/2012 4:27:59 AM)

That coach just had knee surgery but Kobe likes him since they can both speak Italian.

He will just sit on the bench. As I recall, Phoenix didn't win Titles.

Enough said.

Pat Riley is the best coach in NBA.

And, The Truth, Paul Pierce, shoyld be added to any winning team (Celtics)....he still plays like he's in his 20's.

muhly22222 -> RE: Lakers hire Mike D'Antoni (11/26/2012 6:37:30 PM)

I don't think this was such a bad move. It really didn't seem like Phil's heart was in it (he didn't want to coach regular-season road games, for instance).

Nash obviously fits into D'Antoni's system, having won two MVP's while playing for him in Phoenix. D'Antoni's system is basically pick-and-roll with shooters on the outside; is there a player you'd rather run a pick-and-roll with over Dwight Howard? That huge frame, incredible athleticism, the phsyicality...Howard will shine. Remember that Stoudemire was a star for D'Antoni when there was a competent point guard.

And the common knock on D'Antoni is that he doesn't coach defense. True, in Phoenix his team's defense was not good enough to win a championship, but who was his interior defender? Stoudemire is nowhere near the interior defender that Howard is. Kobe is also a better perimeter defender than D'Antoni ever had in Phoenix.

That basically leaves two big question marks, Kobe and Gasol. Gasol can fit into this system, because he can step out to 18 feet and hit jumpers, and he is a great passer. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded for shooters, but only time will tell. Kobe's the interesting question. He hasn't done a lot in the pick-and-roll game, using mostly isolation to get his points. He would most easily fit into a Joe Johnson-esque role, but he's considerably better than Johnson, and has considerably more of an ego. I'm sure D'Antoni can tweak his system to incorporate the best parts of Kobe's game, though.

I'm hoping to start a thread on the next week or two, "Cowboys hire Mike Holmgren".
