Attempts at or aspirations of secession from the United States have been a feature of the country's politics since its birth. Some have argued for a constitutional right of secession and others for a natural right of revolution. The United States Supreme Court ruled unilateral secession unconstitutional while commenting that revolution or consent of the states could lead to a successful secession.

The one serious secession movement was defeated in the American Civil War. In 1860 and 1861, eleven of the fifteen southern states where slavery was legal declared their secession from the United States and joined together as the Confederate States of America. It collapsed in 1865 after losing the war with the northern states.[1]

Oh the irony!

Perhaps, Pres Obama, feeling magnanimous in the wake of his historic victory, might declare a National Period of Mourning so the other lot can process all their bitterness and anger at their loss, work through their sour grapes and come out the other side feeling up to the task of re-uniting the country.

Do people think that a 90 day period will be long enough for the Right to remember what all those platitudes about personal responsibility the Right was only too keen to impress on others might mean in their cases? If all those platitudes have any meaning at all, it is that the Right has to take full responsibility for its rejection by the US electorate. To date I haven't seen any signs that they are prepared to step up to the plate and take responsibility. All I have seen is blame shifting and denial on a massive scale.

Am I missing anything?

Looking over all those White House secession petitions, I find it curious how their wording is identical time and time again...

If you took the time to research them, they probably came for the same Obamaphobic source.

Lucy, what is wrong with the way I am reading that link ?
Seems to me that there are petitions there from states that voted ,quite strongly too,to re-elect the President....why would they be seceding ?

Unless like in the case of Prop 37, there were 3.2 million votes uncounted....and for most Prop 37 would be supported by the liberal segment of the population.

Why would they be seceding...because they are disenfranchised and being dragged along with policies they don't agree with and that affect them personally, financially,morally..?

Understood...but how do those people, assuming some level of intelligence, jive their desire to secede with the fact that one can assume, given the vote, that a majority of her citizens(those engaged enough to actually vote) are happy with the results of this election ?

Such is life in a representative democracy.
Once upon a time a geographical segment of our country allowed their elites to convince them they were in danger of being disenfranchised and dragged along with policies they didn't agree with...etc,etc.
They attempted secession too ,thankfully Lincoln recognized that the he had won an election of all of the United States...and he was determined to be President of a unified country,I'm sure you have heard of the whole episode.Suffice it to say that it was very bloody and didn't work out so well for the secessionists(not so good for the common man wearing blue either,in that a whole lot of them died).
The above was of course an oversimplification of an epochal period of our history,if class were really in session I might take you deeper into that period...but I don't have time today...so the above will need to suffice.

its just pissed off folks..This from Rick Perrys staff
Update at 4:31 p.m.: Moments ago, an email arrived from Catherine Frazier, press secretary for Governor Rick Perry, who has this to say about the petition on the White House website:

Gov. Perry believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it. But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government. Now more than ever our country needs strong leadership from states like Texas, that are making tough decisions to live within their means, keep taxes low and provide opportunities to job creators so their citizens can provide for their families and prosper. We cannot allow Washington’s tax and spend, one-size-fits-all mindset to jeopardize our children’s future, undermine our personal liberties and drive our nation down a dangerous path to greater dependence of government.
