When I'm on the bus and I'm sitting and that happens I just lean back my head out of the way and turn it. Never had a problem except once when the person was about 400 lbs and well...there was no room whatsoever so I just did the best I could and turned my head as far around as I could maneuver.

Why not involve said lady, Niney? Make yourself user friendly? A quick, "Hands up, Lady, I'm about to slide me arse past ya," would be a polite offer. It will give her the opportunity to cop a feel and get you your christmas goose a little early. Seriously, though, if you truly do not wish to offend, consider strategically placing a good-sized, thin book, magazine or bag (NOT your tea bag!) between you and your fellow commuter, as a barrier. And, agreed, it's less appropriate to sidle past butt-to-other than crotch-to-other...unless you do either in a provocative manner. QR
