I looovvve through hiking and camping, the first thing I realized first time out was, "ok this backpack is to heavy..." it was like 35kg and bulky, and while that weight is doable, it severely detracts from the enjoyment of hiking when carried for hundreds of miles, and for me, I felt I was really pushing a back or knee injury. And so began my year long effort, to make the perfect camping backpack, I found a few places that were invaluable in helping me, The first is TNP (The Nuttnfancy Project) on youtube, The guy is a avid camper/ hiker and preparedness type that has videos ranging from gun/knife/tent reviews to first aid methodology/ concealed carry philosophy. He is a great reviewer, heaps of gear covered and I respect his views on a lot of topics. In short, he saved me a fuck load of money. B.O.B. (bug out bag), A search for this on the net or youtube was also very handy for assembling my camping gear, the people who tend to make videos on this are ZomPocalypse, Survivalist type of people, the idea of a B.O.B is basicly the same as I what I wanted for my backpack. A bag thats ready to go should I ever want/need to just get out of the house and go somewhere, just throw it in the car and your ready for any situation... Ebay is your friend, When you start a project like this, (I call it a project, because it took a year of buying testing, upgrading, swaping and searching to actually complete, not to mention over $3000), you will be buying a lot of stuff thats just not available locally, places like ebay amazon and the like are really essential. You two main enemies are weight and bulk, everything needs to be as light and compact as possible to fit the most capability into your pack, not to mention make it carryable and in the hiking world, you should expect to pay more to get less. The lighter and smaller you go will almost always translate into expensive. I can relate to what AS said about the preparedness thing being a kind of extention of the hiking hobby, some aspects anyway... The ZomPocalypse is just a way of saying your preparing for when the shit hits the fan and having a sense of humour at the same time. I'm not at all prepared for any type of Apocalypse but I am an experienced hiker, shooter, watche every episode of man vs wild.[:D] As a certain thread has shown recently, three quarters of people wil resort to cannibalism to survive so maybe preparing to fight off people trying to eat your brains isn't so farfetched... -Aries
