Another good idea is to grab a can of spray paint if nothing else is around - spray the zombie's eyes full which not only blinds them pretty much permanently as their eyes should be drying out anyways, but also negates any sense of smell they might have long enough to escape.
Honestly though, the "undead" zombie just isn't viable for myriad medical and scientific reasons, but what is possible is a weaponized form of rabies, tweaked to stimulate the rage and hungers centers of the brain, and to turn off rational thought and overstimulate adrenaline and endorphin production.
Like the "28 Days" zombies, these still-living humans would attack mindlessly, at full speed, clawing and biting in unthinking hunger, able to spread the virus through their saliva or blood, so getting sprayed by their fluids when you kill them would lead to infection if it contacted mucous membranes, such as getting in the eyes, nose, mouth or any open wounds. They would also be highly resistant to pain or damage on account of the adrenaline/endorphin rush coupled with zero self-preservation instinct, and would only go down after severe trauma.
The good news there is that a great percentage of ragers would still not be in top physical shape or ability, such as the very young, the very old, the overweight, the ones with pre-existing debilitating conditions. Just pray you don't live near a high school football team or a Gold's Gym.
