Status: offline 		I'm thinking of signing up for this, or one of the series:

But I've only just started running. It looks like loads of fun and it's months away. Is it really grueling? Am I mad?

Status: offline 		Did something similair Athena & trust me you're gonna find out how to breathe through your arse, it's seriously heavy going.

Go for it & good luck. It's worth it for the experience..

Status: offline 		Have one friend that was in red bull flutag last week
3 more & trainer that do trojan run,amazon run(????) I forget! They all run muddy obsticle coarse in combat boots with roller derby type pads.

Have had those friends tell me how great it is, then read in the paper that 3 people died in same race.

Status: offline 		I have to tell you about a cultural difference that made me laugh.

When I read the title of this thread I immediately thought of rural midwest version. It involves various motorized vehicles. A long dug out hole in the ground, nearly the length of a foot ball field. Many gallons of water dumped into the hole. A few large tractors with chains. Rednecks.

The rednecks take their motorized whatever ( different classes involve: motorcycles, ATVs, cars, small pickup trucks, large pickup trucks) one at a time, to the starting line, stomp on the gas aiming for the long muddy hole in the ground. Trying to get past the finish line at the other end of the muddy hole in the ground faster than anyone else has, or will.

The tractors are for dragging out the vehicles the big muddy hole eats.

I hope so as well!!! Your version sounds much more interesting than what I envisioned. If I didn't think my knees would blow, I would soooooooo give it a whirl. They already are not thrilled with running, but the added stress of mud would likely destroy them.

Status: offline 		It does look like so much fun. I just don't wanna kill myself!

I'm also a bit concerned about the swimming you have to do in some of those races. I'm a pretty good swimmer but I've never swum in the cold English open waters without a wetsuits, I'd be worried that I'd just seize up.

On the plus side my body fat is high enough that maybe I can float across.

whence i twere a young lad think i used to put my trainers on and run hills burns and so on - mind you with our British summer, worst ever i could do all that now cutting my lawn (4 cuts this year it was never dry once).

Now if i had me a subby i would have made her cut the lawn with her teeth and have no need to mention my lawn

Status: offline 		I did one of these this past spring. It was both awesome and awful. I hated every minute while I was doing it (ETA: well, maybe not every minute, but a lot of it!), but it felt amazing to finish and known I gotten through it. The hardest part was the obstacles... I just didn't have the upper-body strength for a couple of them, and I don't deal well with heights.

Also, don't wear any clothes or shoes that you care about or will want to wear again. The mud will RUIN EVERYTHING. And if you wear glasses? Don't. Or put some safety goggles on over them or something. If they fall in the mud you'll never get them back.

Uh.....yes, you are mad, yes it's grueling and no, there is no chance in hell I'd do that.

I thought the same thing as LaTigresse..I don't know if they are done much here in the U.S.

Heh...the first time I heard of mud runs, this is exactly what I thought too. In Western PA, a mud run is the same thing. My husband decided to take part in one of these one night when he was drunk with his friends with our little Toyota 4x4.

He came home....without the car. He was so drunk he couldn't remember where he left it. His friends dropped him off. That day I called up the guys, bitched them out and found out where it was. I found out why he didn't drive it home...not because he was drunk but because he tore out the transmission! ggggrrrrr.

The mud runs that Athena is talking about sounds much safer. lol

Status: offline 		I have never done one but they have a couple of them here in Orange County, CA every year. I think at the new extremely unfinished "Great Park".

I know when the Marines were here they had Mud Runs for charity.
