Ever shopped for your niece, daughter, granddaughter, or another young girl for the holidays? If you have, you know it can seem like the only options out there are super stereotypical little girl--all pink, princess-themed, and sparkly. There are great toys, books and movies out there-- gifts that show powerful, healthy images of girls and women. But it can be really hard to find them sometimes, and with the holiday season coming up quickly, we figured we could all use some help making it a little easier. That's why we're asking you to help us put together the first ever UltraViolet Holiday Gift Guide: A 21st Century Guide to Non-sexist Holiday Shopping. It's a way for the entire UltraViolet community to share their ideas for the best powerful gifts, which will make all of our holiday shopping a little easier. Do you know of a great toy, game, DVD, or book to recommend for the guide? Submit it here: Nominate a gift to UltraViolet's Holiday Gift Guide. The UltraViolet Holiday Gift Guide will be generated entirely by our members, which means we need you to nominate your favorite gift ideas for this to work. It's easy--just tell us about a book, movie, toy, or other gift that you think makes a great non-sexist gift for a girl or boy. After all the nominations are in, UltraViolet members will vote on which gifts make it into the final guide. The Ultraviolet Holiday Gift Guide will be available our website, on Facebook, and as a printable list in early December--just in time for holiday shopping. There are already a few great holiday gift guides with a cause that come out every year: U.S. PIRG has a guide to help parents avoid toxic and dangerous toys, and Environmental Working Group puts out a guide to help shoppers avoid unsafe chemicals at the makeup counter. But we haven't found any gift guides that are specifically aimed at helping consumers find great, nonsexist toys for girls (and boys). So we thought--who better than the UltraViolet community to create one? But for this to work, we need to start with your best ideas for empowering gifts. I haven't shopped for a birthday, Christmas, Valentines, Mothers day or any other gift since 1985. My secretary has a full list of people I care about, all their birthdays, I get a stack of cards 2 weeks before Christmas to sign, one every time there's a birthday, one on Mothers day (Dad's long gone), 3 or 4 on Valentines day (except when I was married) I sign them....2 days prior to whatever event there is I get a present or a box of them with the card I signed and I hand them out. (And they're always waaaaay more interesting gifts than I would have thought of...I enjoy them opening them as much as they do!).

thankfully I never had this problem with my daughter. She's always been a girly girl so that's the stuff I always buy her. Personally though I don't really see it all that difficult to buy girls or boys stuff that is neutral. I mean, you could buy a girl a pair of jeans, a board game, a red tshirt, video games....very few are actually boy/girl these days.

They are very well done miniatures, made in almost indestructible plastic. Various companies make them but I am partial to Schleich. There is also a company called Papo that has some good ones. My preference is the more exotic animals and I have them stuck in curious places all over the house. Whales and a hippo in the bathroom. Monkeys in a ficus bonsai. Meerkats in a kitchen window with an elephant family and two ostriches. Stuff like that. They also do buildings, trees, and even people. As well as farm animals and fantasy figures. Ertl is another company I love. They have all sorts of farm buildings and animal miniatures that the grands of both genders love to play with. You should see the little baby pigs that go with the farm set! Adorable.

My oldest grand daughter is allllll about pretending to be a super hero. Well I found out who is her favourite so, for Xmas, she is getting a Capt. America costume. The younger one is the ruffles and bows one I have to chase out of my jewelry.

My son doesnt want to read unless its THE DIARY OF A WIMPY KID SERIES. He is 8 and will actually sit down and get interested. and Legos, my GOd legos legos legos. My daughter is 10, and guess what she collects. hand santizers from bath and body lol. Has every scent available. Adores Justice for the clothes and wild shoes, and the crackle nail polish. Any beauty products she is gah gah for. Not exactly educational, but she is very clean and looks good. :)

You will have to drink heavily and get your I don't give a fuck on. Shine up the movie camera, it could be that gift that keeps on giving if you find yourself a little short for retirement.

This is cool, I will have to think hard about this. My daughter isn't even one yet and doesn't have much in the way of interests, but I find it infuriating how much pink crap is in the house already. When she is big enough to express her opinions, if she wants glitter sparkle princess ballerina fairies, that's fine. But she's a tiny baby! She doesn't need everything pink. I also don't feel the need to dress her all in pink - I couldn't care less if people in the street can tell if she's a girl. If her personality at this age is at all indicative i think she'll be more of a rollerskates and mud pie girl than a princess since she's so rough and tough. For Christmas she's getting building blocks, a ride-on bug, a slide, a xylophone, a pirate ship, a small heap of books and a doll. At this age until she shows clear preferences, I'm more about what skills the toys encourage. We'd do the same if she were a boy. We probably would have chosen a more manly name though.
