D/s jewelry shouldn't be just for submissives. [;)]

I don't remember what macrame looks like, I only remember being a little kid in California in the 70's and seeing this scratchy thin rope being used along with wooden beads to hang up plants. If there is a link to some pretties with silk cord...

Yanno, Christmas is coming up and my boy has been pestering me to let him get me some jewelry type stuff. Then there's my birthday in April.

Of all the metals out there, silver is my favorite. I think my wearing a necklace that says "Owner of"...would make bo melt into a puddle. I would even enjoy having bracelets with dragons, if they were pretty/fantasy type ones rather than the mean ugly looking ones that are so common.

Price? I dunno. I wouldn't want to be wearing something "expensive", because if the chain broke and I lost it... Had that happen with an ear ring once and so I said f* it and let my ear piercings grow back together.

Finding just the right collar for bo was difficult, and in the end we ended up finding someone in one of our groups that made chainmail. He fell in love with one particular style and so that's what we decided on. We did not negotiate with her about price; she told us how much she needed for it and that was that, we said yes, gimme gimme.

(Now you're making me wonder what happened in that collar thread I posted in, lol.)

Anyway, next year bo will be getting another tattoo, one of a dragon circled around a unicorn. It would be wonderful to get a necklace just like it. For me to wear.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: collar ideas (11/16/2012 11:50:51 AM)

That's very pretty, is that a glass pendant?

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: collar ideas (11/16/2012 11:55:58 AM)

I posted a couple of examples of macrame jewelry. That's what macrame can look like, if you are good with it.

And I agree, I would not be designing just for female subs, but males as well, and not just for submissives either. His and her jewelry can do quite well.

I can buy (and possible make) locks and keys which are a nice motif for this type of jewelry.

At this point my silversmithing abilities do not run to making them myself, but in theory I should be able to make a lock and key that also works as a clasp for the necklace. There are a wide variety of different designs for this. It does take a certain amount of sheet silver to make these, so they would not be on the cheap side.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: collar ideas (11/16/2012 11:57:17 AM)

Thank you, that is a cute site. Please, could you send me the other one when boy friday is available?

It could be very helpful for pricing.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: collar ideas (11/16/2012 12:16:26 PM)

I agree I think the collar market is saturated with the same old same old thing that I've been seeing for many years now.

That would be chain male, chains in general, flat metal (generally silver) and the eternity collar. Not that there is anything wrong with those designs if people like them, it's just that I don't and I've run across many others who don't as well.

I'm thinking of a new and different host of choices to these limited collar options. This is a possible sideline, as I already design all different kinds of jewelry and beads for the mainstream market.

The thing with handmade jewelry is that you have to be extremely creative and make things others can't, don't or won't, or it does not market well. Just stringing beads, pretty as that may be, doesn't cut it.

Right now I use macrame, my own hand made beads together with semi-precious stones, and wire-wrapping. AND I am just starting to relearn my silversmithing skills (which are 30 years out of date.) I've been designing one thing or another in one form or another for those 30 years.

Obviously this thread is a one way to learn how to market what I already do to a niche which shares my interests.

*nods* I think there's probably a lot of truth to that. That's why I commented up front that my tastes were pretty specific. I'm a bad candidate for your prospective products but I thought it'd be worth knowing that also in your market analysis.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: collar ideas (11/16/2012 1:02:22 PM)

I very much appreciate your input; in marketing, negative input is just as important as positive.

There is a reason some of those designs have been around so long, people buy them. This is a marketing basic.

One of my questions is: Do people buy them b/c they like them, or b/c that was the best choice of the limited options available?

Obviously some must like them. But I've been hearing about various collar issues for so many years now, I know not everyone does.

And notice I didn't mention leather (even though I macrame with leather twine as well). Now, there is nothing wrong with a sturdy and functional leather collar for play. As something a person wears day to day, it's a nightmare, b/c there is no way to keep it clean. Even if you cleaned it daily with a leather cleaner, people sweat around the neck and eventually bacteria breeds.

Although chain and chain male can be worn with a certain degree of comfort, many (primarily female) don't like that look for everyday. I don't.

I've seen some gorgeous flat wire designs, but people do complain about comfort.

The eternity collars are a nice, simplistic design, and I've heard very good things about eternitycollars.com.

But I'm not considering competing with them at all, or with the chain, chain male or flat wire collar makers. They are well entrenched and I think it would be extremely difficult to break into those markets.

At this point it is something that I am kicking around. I will most likely come up with a few very different designs and then use them as examples for custom work.

I would say for straight run , couple different colors/stones you're looking at a retail cap of 125 to sell in bulk, maybe 75 wholesale. Custom work, gold or silver strands woven in more. Custom the skys the limit

chatterbox24 -> RE: collar ideas (11/16/2012 6:11:16 PM)

I think if you macramed a softer fabric like silk, alot like the one you show and tiny beads through out it would be gorgeous, with a center type glass piece of some sort would be just beautiful. and a beautiful clasp to boot. I would buy that, and really appreciate the delicacy of it and the work.

ResidentSadist -> RE: collar ideas (11/16/2012 7:59:16 PM)

A macramé posture collar, a neck corset could be rather elegant and functional.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: collar ideas (11/17/2012 9:19:49 AM)

What an absolutely marvelous idea, thank you !

That you called it a neck corset made a light bulb go off in my head in terms of how one should be designed.

This could be very pretty and elegant and supremely functional.

graceadieu -> RE: collar ideas (11/18/2012 9:41:41 PM)

What I would love is something that's:

1) discreet enough to wear in a casual business environment
2) sturdy enough to, as Athena put it, "be tugged on" (which I will do in my sleep) and wear almost 24/7 for years
3) made of a material that won't irritate my skin or get ruined by moisture or friction. I'm thinking stainless steel or sterling silver.
4) non-locking,
5) comfortable,
6) looks at least moderately feminine,
7) sits close to the neck, and
8) is under $150.

littlewonder -> RE: collar ideas (11/19/2012 12:39:25 AM)

With the ex Dom I had this basic steel metal collar. After he left it amazingly fit the neck of the dog I owned at that time. [:D]

Now I just wear bracelets that Master gave me. I guess if one day he decided to buy me an actual collar though I would want one that looks like this.

Very elegant and simple. Don't look at the price! [sm=hewah.gif]

Now if someone could make that with diamonds and only with a pricetag of a few hundred dollars. [:)]

What can I say. I have expensive tastes.

My style wishes are along the line of graceadieu. I have an eternity collar but the area where the screw goes to lock it is not discreet enough for my civilian career as well as the hinge. The heaviness of that collar also starts to rub my neck in a bad way. I love the design of your macramé but I want a collar that I can wear in the shower, the whole 24/7 thing. For my mind set, wearing collars that have the look and feel of beautiful jewelry takes away the feeling/headspace of wearing a slave collar. I could see myself wearing a style of the first pic you posted for special occasions. You have beautiful designs. Thank you for sharing pics of your work.

DraftPony -> RE: collar ideas (11/20/2012 7:20:23 AM)

My Mistress makes the macrame collars using the hemp cord. She also can add stones/crystals to them. She has been known to do neck corsets in the macrame too. They can be locking or non locking.

Mysia -> RE: collar ideas (11/20/2012 5:22:11 PM)

The below one is more to my liking than the regular collars, which have in fact turned me off the idea of collars. Heck, I rather tattoo someone than have my dear wear a typical collar. Macrame is is fine if done with a thin enough rope, maybe a dolly thread?
