I remember getting Zingers (chocolate) when I was younger. These days, I get a pack from the Valero on I20 and 155 here in TX when we go to Tyler. Guess I have to miss them as well.

I agree...customers lose out, workers lose out, factories are empty...

This is a tragedy!
The fact that they could not reach an agreement somewhere in the middle, while people kept their jobs, just floors me.

It's hard to find anyone more pro-Union than I am, but being homeless, hungry, and hard up ain't fun either.

They should/could have worked this out, even if it took a year or so.

I feel sorry for the people whose lives and welfare this will affect. As for Hostess products, I never cared for any of them, so that's no loss for me.

There was an interesting article about this in Fortune FOUR MONTHS AGO. It's too simplistic just to blame the workers.

What exactly were the workers STRIKING for? Was it just to get better pay, or were there actual safety issues that the company wasn't addressing?

The Bakers union blames mismanagement while the company blames the workers. Simply a case of "he said, she said".

Also, the customer base was changing towards healthier foods. I know that there is no such thing as fat-free Twinkie (or Ding dongs or Zingers).

Over here in the UK, whenever there are reports on obesity or bad foods or 'stuff you shouldn't feed your kids with' - that's when we see 'Twinkies' being mentioned. It's been like that for decades.
There were even 'healthier lifestyle' and various cookery programs that slated the Twinkie.

My first visit to the US involved tasting this wonderful delicacy... I almost threw up!

Far too sweet and yucky!

And it's no wonder the average American populace is becoming seriously obese if they stuff themselves with this sort of stuff.
Add to that the number of products that contain a higher percentage of sugar and salt, plus the (in)famous MSG - it's a recipe for disaster.

I'm a fine one to talk - I'm overweight too! lol.
But at least we don't have Twinkies over here and I'm really glad we don't.

Regardless of the availability of Twinkies or otherwise, it is a real shame that the unions and management couldn't resolve the issues at hand though.
It's hard enough to live comfortably as it is these days without more workers being out of a job.

And it's not just the USA either.
Apart from possibly India and China, most countries are feeling the economic pinch.

(Not tried them myself, but apart from that Harvey Milk ugliness, I'm only really aware of the Hostess stuff from those adverts they used to have in American comics in the '70s...)

Yep, there you go. People can blame the unions but I would wager that those CEO's who tripled their pay were not union members. I wish I could do some research into this.

I think I heard that they were striking because the proposal demanded the workers take a pay cut and also to pay a larger share of their benefits.

Americans I've spoken to have warned me that you need to have been training your palate and digestive system from a very early age to handle the Twinkie. If you grew up on jammy dodgers and chocolate digestives, the twinkie is just too much to handle...

Ummm, margins collapsed because of the nature of the business, and the company was almost certainly going to die anyway. But that didn't stop executives from granting themselves huge pay raises. Meanwhile the union workers' pension fund was underfunded (that's private equity for ya), and the company asked the workers to start funding it themselves. The workers, who had just agreed to concessions three years earlier, basically said, "Fuck you, no, shared sacrifice doesn't mean we do all the sacrificing while you get pay raises." They threatened to strike. Management threatened to shut down the company if the workers went on strike. The workers went on strike anyway. And management shut down the company.

I remember as a child in elementary school having a ding dong in my lunch each day...there was something about unwrapping that foil wrapped treat.....but it has been a long time since I have regularly eaten any of Hostess' treats...The only one I eat about twice a year is the shockingly pink Snowballs....they have everything.....coconut, marshmallow, chocolate cake and cream filling......I will miss those only and if some of other company starts making the Hostess line again I hope they keep the Snowballs in the roster.

When a hedge fund owns a business the Unions should know there is no negotiating. These companies know what a company is worth liquidated and are in the business of liquidating. Watch OPM with Danny DeVito.
Unfunded pension - everybody has one - look at CA every govt agency in CA is underfunded by millions - total is in the billions why, union pensions and govt employee contracts approved by elected that are owned by the unions..
Hostess was probably doomed anyway. the hedge companies are already marketing the brand and facilities might very well come back under another name and non union shop.
