Don't get me wrong.......I feel horrible for the people laid off. And, Being a health food fanatic, I cannot even remember the last time I ate one of their products. However, I saw this on my facebook this morning and had to share.

Twinkies

I have no love for them

But

They look awesome microwaved.

It's a tragedy for the workers, but good for them standing their ground. How else are people supposed to get better pay? The prevailing view in this country seems to be that workers shouldn't cry foul when they get paid the meager wages they agreed to. So, this is what happens when they don't feel like agreeing to it anymore.

LaTigresse -> RE: Farewell to the twinke (11/18/2012 8:28:02 AM)

I will be leaving a job I've been at since 2001. I honestly cannot remember when we last received a pay increase. The pay isn't terrible certainly. Not even in comparison to many jobs available in the area. BUT...when you set yourself up for a certain lifestyle. A mortgage, car payment, living things that depend upon you.....many of the costs of maintaining continue to rise. But when your pay does not, the challenges tend to sneak up on you.

Now I am finding that I can find work much closer to home, for similar pay. The challenge is that, because of location and few jobs, there is more competition.

I am being patient. I will find something and my leaving will be a shock and difficulty for my current employer. It will be a difficult conversation but necessary.

I wish you all the best, LaT.

Ditto!

I've learned repeatedly through personal experience that we tend to hold ourselves back from getting what we are worth, just because we want to avoid the uncertainty of looking for a new job and the discomfort/unpleasantness of leaving the environment we know.

LaTigresse -> RE: Farewell to the twinke (11/18/2012 8:43:35 AM)

Aww thank you Poise.

I only posted that because, while I am not familiar with the facts in the Hostess deal, I can understand how employees could get frustrated with their employer........even in this job environment and even when others see their job as being pretty damned good.

It's frighteningly easy to become accustomed to a way of life. Then, when your part of your health insurance premium keeps going up, the coverage keeps decreasing, the cost of getting to work keeps increasing..........etc etc etc. And all of the sudden you realize that it's getting tougher to pay the bills, the credit card balances start creeping up and you find yourself able to pay less and less. It's a sneaky thing. And yes, it does create hard feelings........especially when you see, or know of, those running the show, those responsible for your pay, giving themselves bonuses and pay increases. Or driving company cars with company credit cards.

Maybe they will decide to make an offer you can't refuse. I once got a 30 Percent increase and a car in just your situation...be ready with demands just in case.

Butch, not in this case. I know the company owner very very well. He will feel betrayed and hurt. He will get very assy with me.

I'm real sorry to hear that, LaT. Good luck to you.

I haven't had anything Hostess makes in over 20 years. My daughter never liked them and Twinkies always tasted like a sponge to me.

Ya, but the Ding Dongs on the other hand....

ShaharThorne -> RE: Farewell to the twinke (11/19/2012 6:53:24 AM)

Ding Dongs are the shitz!!!

So are chocolate Zingers and yes, I mourn them as well.

Can the Bakers union have an audit on the company to see how much the management is getting in bonuses? Have the DOL look into it?

punisher440 -> RE: Farewell to the twinke (11/19/2012 7:29:41 AM)

I ran across these online,so the ones craving Twinkies and Ding Dongs all hope is not lost if you can bake.

LizDeluxe -> RE: Farewell to the twinke (11/21/2012 5:48:26 AM)

I was never a Twinkie fan but I loved those frosted chocolate cupcakes when I was younger and consumed such things. I haven't had a Hostess anything in at least a decade.

The workers? You strike and you roll the dice. Liquidation is always one option for the company. Too bad (especially at this time of year) but you make your bed and you lie in it. They work(ed) in a highly competitive industry that currently has an overabundance of capacity. I'm trying to muster some sympathy but it's just not happening.
