I used to teach and coach at a Catholic school. Did they have the right to FORCE me to follow their religion?

HINT: Their insurance plan covered the BC pills of my SO at the time.

Actually, it is about religious people not being forced to financially support a practice with which they disagree.

If the government has said that corporations are "people" then corporations also have First Amendment rights. Hobby Lobby doesn't hide the fact that it is a Christian company. They print bible verses on their bags, are closed on Sunday and play Christian music. They ARE a Christian company. Their owners state that they try to run their business with Biblical principles.

Now their only other choice is to drop everyone down to part-time status and/or hire only Christians and have them sign an employment contract that states that they will live up to Christian ideals, particularly while they appeal this decision.

Actually they have another utterly viable option, GET THEIR NOSES OUT OF THE PRIVATE AFFAIRS OF OTHER PEOPLE!

They/he have/has every right as a citizen and a corporation (corporations are people too you know) to petition the courts.

The courts were right....as a privately held (the guy owns all the shares) but for profit company (not a church), he has no legal grounds for his own personal preferences (from a federal standpoint).

Now, if he wants to set the company up as a church, accept donations (as opposed to list prices on specific products) he can do that.

He probably won't.

Nevertheless, he isn't putting his nose (or any other appendage for that matter) into the private affairs of anyone...he's simply voicing his opinion, with a vastly larger stick than most of us possess.

No harm, no foul...no laws broken....and....no private affairs of anyone intruded upon.

(Contrary to popular, misguided and, VASTLY uneducated opinion).

(Gawwwwwd I'm glad, once again, my parents decided to educate me).

BULLSHIT!

The owner wanted to get out of having the health insurance he provides to his employees provide contraceptives to his employees. That is very much sticking his nose into their private affairs. It is profoundly unAmerican.

The next obvious step for the company is to reduce as many of their hourly workers as possible to under thirty hour work weeks to avoid the mandate. They'll have to play ball on the healthcare contraception but no doubt they'll fight it tooth and nail. In one respect they are exceptional though. Black Friday for them in remaining on Friday.

Except for the statement as to being profoundly "unAmerican", correct.

Again, as a private individual, he has every right to pursue his own personal agenda in court.

He lost.

And that, my friend is most assuredly, and SOUNDLY....American.

Again, he lost.

Actually, they are constantly trying to intrude.

Authored by Republican Majority Whip Debbie Lesko, the birth control measure states that women who want birth control pills to be covered by their insurance plans must submit a form affirming that they need the drug solely for medical reasons. In addition, the bill grants employers the right to deny insurance coverage for contraceptives, abortifacients, abortions or sterilization if it goes against the company's religious beliefs. And some activists argue that the bill allows employers to fire or choose not to hire women who use birth control to avoid pregancy, even if they pay for it themselves.

Thank goodness I don't have to deal with birth control unless its for my daughter. She takes the depo shot because of heavy bleeding and cramping. Her father's insurance covers for it. Nothing about religion comes up.

If she wants to go work for Hobby Lobby, she might not like it. She is a lapsed Lutheran and Christian music drives her bonkers.

I hear this sort of stupidity a lot. And anyone who actually read the law knows that it's FULL-TIME-EQUIVALENT. In other words, add up the entire payroll, and divide by 40 hours/week or so, and that's the number of employees you have. Cutting hours for individual people doesn't get you out of the requirement.

The point here is that the connection between the company, and the benefit is non-existent. Can an employer tell you where to spend your cash? No. Same thing.

I agree with the judge. Having said that, I shop at Hobby Lobby and I eat at Chick-Fil-A. I don't participate in mindless lemming boycotts and nobody tells me where to shop.

Personally, I didn't know that Hobby Lobby existed before this and if i did, i can't imagine I would have a reason to go unless they sell flyrods and floggers.
As for chic fil a, I like Wendy's better. Esp the spicy one.

And this, THIS, is why the Republicans are doing badly politically. Endlessly intrusive in things which are none of their business, many wish to eliminate the church-state separation, control every aspect of sex and pregnancy based on biblical interpretation, from a fantasy fairy tale book which they read selectively, pushing only the things with which they agree, ignoring the rest.

But of course, the moment that unwanted child is born, they wash their hands of all responsibility, repeatedly vote to cut funds for its care and education. They love the fetus, hate the baby.

And my favorite part is, they never learn. Here's hoping they control the Republican primary process and run zealots for President forever who pander to their insanity.

Depo provera, is used for bleeding and cramping associated with some women having naturally more problems with menses. It does not necessarily mean, most times it doesnt, that there are problems, other then, just a more difficult period. MIght be genetics etc.
Its not a band aid is a solution.

As far as the actual thread. I believe unless its a religious organization, no company should dictate the needs of their employees or make prejudice against them. When your a company you follow the law. If your beliefs are so strong you cant follow the law which is put in place to protect people, then well maybe one should start a religous organization and leave crafts to the more open minded. You dont have to believe or live the way others do, but its good to respect their right to do so. anyway thats my lousy two cents.

I agree about the Depo. My question was more about the idea that using the Depo is a bandaid rather than a viable solution to a problem many women have.

Viagra causes a hard cock. Its also available under other names when used for other conditions besides impotence.

Unfortunately, the same is not true for birth control devices when used for medical problems. So, many assume that because a woman is on Depo that she is fucking around. They also assume that if its for a medical condition, there MUST be another way to treat that condition. Im sure a hysterectomy would do it... but who the hell wants to yank all the plumbing at an early age if they dont have too, which brings around the problem of hormone replacement....

I just really get fed up with these holy rollers telling women AND Doctors how to treat women.

Au contraire.....add more employees at 17 hours a week and VOILA!!!! There you are!

Bud....the United States employers are going to do what they can (I won't...I prefer my people to be fully insured, and I'll pay to make it happen but)...LARGE corporations....get ready for the "USA of temp".

Voters get what they paid for.

Hellooooooooooooooo.

Welcome to the new world :)

If you don't have an employer like me that actually gives a shit....enjoy. It's a brave new world and....you voted for it.

It won't cost me a damned dime because I already cover my staff...and I always will....but the bulk of the population that works for large companies....

It's kinda like voting for a union...you lose your right to come to me and say "Hey JJ....I've really progressed, I deserve a raise...I'm adding value"....wherein which I tell you..."Ehhhhhh....sorry bud, you're represented by the Union now...you're kinda fucked actually....see...you only get raises every 3 - 5 years and....if you're exceptional....you gotta wait 3 - 5 years for a raise".

Ooooops....exceptional talent doesn't get a raise....that just fucking sucks.

(Monday's gonna be a bitch).
