So many people try to stereotype us kinky folk. What would surprise people that might not correlate with your BDSM persona?

For me a very submissive sissy it is my career- I have spent years in a macho male dominated niche of the construction industry. I often think it is humorous to be wearing my hard hat and my panties.

I don't think anyone who knows me on either "persona" would be very surprised by the other. Heck, even the bit about posting photos of myself online in panties would probably be entirely predictable to anyone who knew me. Most of them would laugh and say, "Sounds like Jeff. An opportunity to twist some prudish tails? Yeah, he'd jump at that." I don't really do "personas".

I think you'll find a lot of people will mention their careers in relation to this. Isn't it common for many high-powered business executives to be submissive in their personal life? Their break away from having these big decisions etc placed on them in their working life.

I think I have a nice mix in my personality. I have been accused many times in my personal and work environment of being argumentative, opinionated and bitchy at times. I'm glad I'm not a doormat who doesn't stand up for herself. Oh and I'm also going to answer with the career point too, I'm a manager in a very fast paced position and I'm extremely ambitious. Maybe I'm not a 'true' submissive [:(]

I think for me....just the fact that I am "kinky" at all would surprise many people with whom I interact because, well, I was raised a "southern lady" (including charm school lol), sing in the church choir, blah blah blah. For me it has nothing to do with hiding or persona. I simply don't feel the need to advertise what I do in my personal life. I don't think it is necessary to wear latex and a collar under my choir robe ;). I am not one dimensional - I have lots of facets, like most people.

I garden, sew, cook, etc. But in a very macho way, lol!

LaTigresse -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/21/2012 6:59:25 AM)

How quiet, laid back, always laughing and smiling, I am.

How big a pushover I am with cute furry little things, and my grands.

How much I LOVE cooking for people, and seeing them enjoy it.

My friends of now would probably be surprised. My friends of old, not so much.

people always seem surprised that i am a good cook. however, once they know i do get volunteered to do stuff, especially cakes.

they are always surprised that i was once a full time professional portrait/animal artist. sadly, while i have lots of work to do my art is very emotional based for me. if i'm not in the right head space it just doesn't work. i'm looking forward to getting back to a state where i can crack on again.

people are surprised that i write poetry, and that i have started two children's books. again, like the art, it is all about being in the right head space.

it amazes me that no-one is ever surprised about my kink lol

I am a closet bird watcher. I don't like to tell people, because they may get the wrong idea about me. They might think I'm some slightly intellectual, nature-loving geek or something.

AND We all all know I'm WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to kewl for that.

Ya, uh huh......... But I bet you always know where the binoculars are. ( I know I do...another not intellectual, nature loving geek.)

She's the boss in the kitchen

And I once shook hands with the Dali Lama and James Brown on the same day.

Obviously, I was a little sub in the face of such greatness (but obviously more so with James Brown).

I'm a history geek  Movie buff. I prank politicians.

There are several people here who know what I do for a living. As well as where I work ! LOL I actually like it this way! [:)]

That said ... many "kinky" people are highly intelligent, and quite accomplished. My own theory is that the intelligence tends to be attracted to and appealed to ... by kink.

But it is also because we are self confident enough in our vanilla life .. that we are willing to .. well ... explore the edges of social acceptance and convention. Because we are the type that "looks outside the box". [;)]

So I suspect you will find, many here are quite successful.

Darkfeather -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/21/2012 12:34:45 PM)

For me, its more about my age than my kink. I still play video games, collect anime, and build giant robot models. But I just consider those my nilla 'kink'

culareD -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/21/2012 12:58:06 PM)

I think most people I know outside of the lifestyle would be shocked and maybe even judgmental (not that I care). Like most of you, I'm an ordinary person doing ordinary life.

RumpusParable -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/21/2012 1:49:07 PM)

It's come up a number of times that I'm afraid of IVs and such. Friends know me as someone who does blood, cutting, and piercing play as my main interests and then are surprised when they find out I have a REALLY hard time with a LOT of stuff regarding blood, surgery, IVs, etc. For example, I can't look at the inside of my own wrists because of the sight of the tendons and veins. And I've passed out from people just talking about such things around me.

Kana -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/21/2012 1:58:46 PM)

I like romantic comedies and I'm metro as hell. I just got told I have more clothes than any gay man alive.
Oh yeah, and I have a tie fetish-I critique every tie I see, especially on like the TV news and shit

littleone14 -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/21/2012 1:59:33 PM)

My list of friends reads like a Who's Who of alternative lifestyles. They all think I'm the "normal" one. If they had any idea what goes on in my head, they'd find I'm probably one of the freakiest of any of them.......
