MasterG2kTR -> 30 Days.... (11/21/2012 7:29:31 PM)

...left in the countdown for the Mayan calendar and the way it's going in the middle east right now we could easily see global thermo-nuclear war....ok not all that likely to happen.....

.....but hey......somebody had to get a thread going on the Mayan calendar

Oh, please. The rollover from 12:19:19:17:19 to 13:0:0:0:0 is special only for the same reason the Mayan's would celebrate it: that we've made it so far. They would've been ecstatic about the prospect of the 13th b'ak'tun coming along, had they been around, as that would be like being 99 years old and closing on 100, not a magic deadline, but something of an achievement in their world. Eschatologically, it's no more significant than the rollover from 1999:12:31:23:59:59 to 2000:1:1:0:0:0, indeed less so.

If you want to look for meaningful dates, try this one:

2038 January 19th, 03:14:07, Coordinated Universal Time; 2³¹-1 seconds from Epoch (1970 January 1st).

It's far more likely to cause a problem.

That was interesting Level. I think that book just made my wish list.

However, even if the theory is correct, I can't see it having any effect of our current calendar as it is based on his death, not his birth.

Computers count in base 2 numbers, two's complement or one's complement, generally with a number of digits that are some power of 2, these digits being called bits. In pretty much every modern piece of electronics, there is a processor that counts with either 8, 16, 32 or 64 such digits per number. In pretty much everything made from the 1970's to the early 2000's, and much that has been made since, time is represented as a 32 digit binary number in two's complement notation, meaning 2³¹-1 seconds from Epoch (1970 January 1st, midnight by coordinated universal time) is as high as these can count.

Y2K was a minor problem that we solved easily enough, mostly a matter of checking that we hadn't done anything dumb.

Y2038 is not quite so simple, and has a greater scope, but we're trying to fix it.

Feel a bit cheated if it does end on the 21st & you've bough all those pressies.

TheHeretic -> RE: 30 Days.... (11/23/2012 3:54:57 PM)

Given the amount of hype, hysteria, and entertainment value an end of the world prediction can get, I'm surprised we haven't seen more about this.

Back in 1999, the Y2K thing was all over the place. I remember spooking a guy, who was probably trying to sell me emergency supplies, when I told him my Y2K kit consisted of prior military service, a .357, and a Thomas Brothers map of a particular wealthy suburb. He indignantly replied that he lived there, and I just gave him my evil smile, and told him that would work out then.

Then we had that Harold Camping buffoon, who received way too much coverage last year. Americans love a good apocalypse story. Why not this one?

You know, I've seldom seen a media story on some working class hero, who leads a quiet, reputable life...

If the world ends on the 21st, I will have won a $300 million+ powerball on the 19th.

And how often do factoids and logic have any bearing on those who like to believe the end is upon us, Littlewonder?

Oh I'm right there with you TheHeretic. But they are a good form of amusement. [:D]

Ya know....whether my birthday was as noted or otherwise....it really isn't anything to get all that upset about....a day is a year to me and a year is a day.

Chill the fuck out people.
