I really admire and love the skill that one needs to obtain to freestyle, or write raps. However, I listen to all types of music: in fact, I'm listening to Gregorian Chants and writing right now.

That led to this question [sm=cactus.gif]

Is it intrinsically wrong to use it in a poem?

I'm going to do it anyway, just curious.

I had to visit your profile to see if you were from NY because that's so "us". I think context is important but, go ahead and use it. Its too funny an expression not to.

To paraphrase:

Poetry is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards.

Timbaland already slid some gregorian chant into a beat for justin timberlake some years back. In some places back in medieval times gregorian chant was the only music. Anything other than that was just plain evil.

If you can also use "buck" too, then sure...

1. Change the Gregorian chants to Backstreet Boys.

2. Use wylin.

3. Drink. A LOT.

4. Post about it.

On a serious note, writing anything with slang dates its inception. Are you going for a statement about now; capturing a moment; looking to make a comment that retains significance despite a dated/dating reference?

For that matter, what are you writing - poem, short story, song, shit on the bottom of a skateboard?

ETA: I know you asked how it would be in a poem, but dat dun mean youse writin one.

I was writing a poem, but then it turned into a rap, now it's defunct. All because of that one word :(

Jabberwocky

by Lewis Carroll

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Now, Imagine Desi Arnaz reading that.

Think young, urban, partying.

I would equate it with "clubbin". (All of you baby seals out there, stop cringing! Not that kind.)

Hillwilliam -> RE: What's your opinion of "wylin" being used in a serious poem? (11/23/2012 8:57:43 AM)

I'm glad someone finally said wtf it means.

Damn kids.

RemoteUser -> RE: What's your opinion of "wylin" being used in a serious poem? (11/23/2012 9:02:19 AM)

Whiling the day away facing the sun
waiting for wylin and nothing is done
relaxing and running inside of my head

(example of poetry, just for this thread)

Rhyming can be pretty obtuse, and is way overused.

Wylin to rhythm and raw urban sounds
Shifting, slipping, sex and a shot
until thought becomes motion
blur me into the dancing landscape
sweat and collapse
the night is lost in reverberation
shake, shudder, spent

Arrhythmic poetry works if you can put feeling into it.

I should correct myself for Athena; here is a more substantive definition of the term:

adjective Wylin

1. An intense and presumably positive situation or circumstance. IE. "That party was wylin."
2. Pertaining to a healthy state of mind. IE. "How are you?" "I'm wylin."
3. An affirmative response. IE. "I am going to the store." "Wylin."
4. Of an agreeable appearance or nature. IE. "How do you like my shoes?" "They're wylin."

By this set of definitions, it's also a fad that equates to the Canadian 'eh'. [:D]

Didja hop back on that writin hoss, OP?

absolutchocolat -> RE: What's your opinion of "wylin" being used in a serious poem? (11/23/2012 9:02:20 AM)

i'm not sure i'd put it in a "serious" poem, unless it was like a def poetry jam kind of piece.

Edder -> RE: What's your opinion of "wylin" being used in a serious poem? (11/23/2012 9:25:14 AM)

Whoa, it doesn't mean "clubbing" to me. It means freaking out.

"Don't go wylin' just because your shit got stolen!"

"Wyle out" also works :)

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: What's your opinion of "wylin" being used in a serious poem? (11/23/2012 9:56:38 AM)

Thanks, Remote and Edder, I've learned my new thing for the day.

Yeah, freaking out.

RemoteUser -> RE: What's your opinion of "wylin" being used in a serious poem? (11/24/2012 2:06:21 PM)

Alas for the words lost in the meaning.

I suppose if I'm feeling poetic, though, I should put it in my journal. It's been sparse as of late.

Did you ever manage to use the word in a way that you were comfortable with, OP?
