Here in Australia, the national minimum wage is about $16.50 per hour. I understand the American equivalent is much lower. How lower-paid workers in the US get by is not something I understand - it must be a never ending struggle just to keep one's head above water.

I'm told that even long term workers at Walmart get considerably less than $16.50 per hour. I also understand that the owners of Walmart are one of the richest families in the world. It's not too difficult to figure that one out is it? I also hear that Walmart is very antagonistic to unions and union organising. Again, child's play to work that one out.

Not much to do with principle and everything to do with greed.

I was amazed by that minimum wage, until I found this.

If those are correct numbers regarding the cost of living, I think the wages are about equal in reality.

I know numbers lie sometimes, but, that is some high dollar costs to just survive.

Those prices are not expensive from where I'm at.
In most of the categories, Australia is cheaper than us and our minimum wage is £6.25 or AU$9.57 (US$10.02).
Even if the cost of living were equal, us Brits earn just over half of our Australian cousins.

Reasonable, rational people think, "you know, when the left sees their crazy policies fail every time, they will learn." But that isn't how it works. The left just doubles, triples, and quadruples down on stupid. Of course, that makes the problem even worse. But you never have to say you are sorry if you are a leftist. You just say you are for women and birth control, you are for "choice" (you know, smashing the heads of partially born babies), but you are AGAINST choice when it comes to schools (too much chaos in doing that!), and of course the "rich" (that means anybody with any income) has to pay MORE because everybody knows government knows how to spend your money better than you do. Face it, leftists are not rational, they find being logical "constricting" so it is impossible to work with them. Compromise to them is YOU give up. But it's for the children!

The Far Right has seen their policies fail for 30 years and they apparently havent learned.

Least effective incumbent POTUS in generations, a Billion dollars to spend, economy is shit (always good for the challenger) and they got their asses KICKED.

Did they learn anything from this? FUCK NO.

I know numbers lie sometimes, but, that is some high dollar costs to just survive.

I glanced through the table of prices at the link you provided. They struck me as rather high, definitely more than I pay
and I live very close to the centre of Sydney, the most expensive city here. For example milk is costed at $1.50 per litre, I pay $2.00 for 2 litres, or chicken breasts can be found for $8-9 per kilo ($10.73 quoted) or eggs for $2.30 doz not $4.00.
I pay $2-3.50 for a coffee, not $4.00 - I'd regard that price as expensive. Prices are considerably lower in the suburbs, where business rents are much lower.

So I'm inclined to think that 10-20% and sometimes more could be shaved off many of those figures without too much trouble. Also, AUD $16.50 is roughly equal to US $ 17.30 at the current exchange rate of cA$1 = US $1.05.

six members of the Walton clan as reported on the Forbes 400 list in 2007. They are all children or children-in-law of the founders of Walmart. Their total net worth that year: $69.7 billion.

This is a thread devoted to people bragging about going into a chain where a lot of the staff are out on strike to buy stuff in order to encourage the management to treat their staff even worse?

tazzygirl -> RE: WAL*MART Strike Fizzles Out Under Record Sales (11/25/2012 1:24:12 PM)

The numbers I am seeing is 1 out of 1000 were on strike. I wouldnt call that a lot.

Moonhead -> RE: WAL*MART Strike Fizzles Out Under Record Sales (11/25/2012 1:25:37 PM)

Certainly not enough to make any impact, it seems.

tazzygirl -> RE: WAL*MART Strike Fizzles Out Under Record Sales (11/25/2012 1:30:39 PM)

Sadly not... but without a Union behind them (meaning belonging to a Union) what chance did they truly have against the whole system? One man walked out.. and got a trespassing citation.

TheHeretic -> RE: WAL*MART Strike Fizzles Out Under Record Sales (11/25/2012 1:31:48 PM)

Got any idea what kind of subsidies the State of California puts up for illegal immigrants, Lucy? If you did, you wouldn't be nearly so impressed with your pic from Facebook.

$86 million? That's less than what LA County spends in a couple months on welfare to the undocumented. That's one county.

ElChupa -> go go go California! (11/25/2012 1:35:00 PM)

I say go go go California! Sooner or later businesses will move out even faster. See, socialism looks so pretty on paper, doesn't it? Well, not to me, but to some people. Until it kicks in. I've written off that socialist state. And if you don't want to work for walmart, hey here's an idea. QUIT. Find another job. Better yet, open up a competitor, pay your employees $50 and hour with benefits out the ying yang and surely that will put walmart out of business! Once again, ever notice the people demanding things from companies never could run one themselves? Just like their hero o'dimbulb. He's never run a lemonade stand. He is running America.. into the ground. Which is their plan, by the way.

tazzygirl -> RE: WAL*MART Strike Fizzles Out Under Record Sales (11/25/2012 1:40:02 PM)

Oh yes... its our magical, mystical plan! For sure! and we will be coming for you next! Why hide it anymore? You, ElChupa, are our intended target... not America... just you... only you!

No, this is a thread about people showing solidarity with people who exploit workers by visiting their stores ignorant of the fact that this is what keeps everyone stewing in their own piss.

The thread was started by the same guy who blames the union when a bakery company can't run a profitable business without needing to exploit its workers.

It's a bit like those people who use companies such as Google, Amazon, and Starbucks despite the fact that these companies get out of paying tax.

Isn't this the way it is today? It's okay to be on the rob when you already have money, but not if you haven't.
