the reporter asked him several times why it was OK for him to receive his so called "entitlements" but no one else who lost their father

Given his position on SS, for fiscal reasons, it's a 'gotcha' question because it does not relate to SS fiscal troubles. The reporter made it personal. It's a leftist designed attack on Ryan. Like one son attacking a parent for buying the other son a car and not them, all the while ignoring the fact the parent went bankrupt.

I don't blame Ryan for not wanting to answer silly people.

Of course not[8|]

Well, it seems the local news is asking him, which he will not answer, it seems he is a true GOP believer..in the pretense..it's OK for me but not for you....

For those of you who do not know...Paul Ryan's father died while he was a young child...and Paul received SS survivor benefits throughout his life and Social Security paid for his education, including college and law school..

In Law School is where he met is very wealthy wife, when asked at a local event over the weekend about him receiving social security benefits, and now asking they be cut he refused to answer, the reporter asked him several times why it was OK for him to receive his so called "entitlements" but no one else who lost their father, he would not answer and left the stage refusing to take anymore questions...

Ummm. . . payment versus a real father?  I would guess that he would have liked having a father.  I would also guess that asking about that is hurtful.  Do you people have no shame?

Would you have said the same thing if he was a Democrat?

Yes.  I think that all kids need their father.  I did not think that this was political, I just thought it was a harsh thing to ask.

Because, of course, there's absolutely no history of asking people who have stood or are standing for office harsh questions in American politics.
If Ryan was so upset that he stopped the press conference, that's probably another indication that the electorate made the right decision for a change...

He had to have known this would be an issue. He cant hide behind the "hurtful" screen now.

Politesub53 -> RE: Paul Ryan......no answers again (11/27/2012 4:44:47 AM)

Despite Ryans circumstances, it was a legitimate question for a politician to be asked.

tazzygirl -> RE: Paul Ryan......no answers again (11/27/2012 4:50:41 AM)

He also has a bad habit of ending interviews abruptly when he is cornered.

Moonhead -> RE: Paul Ryan......no answers again (11/27/2012 4:50:49 AM)

Absolutely. If he didn't have the testicular fortitude to answer it, he doesn't even belong in the senate, never mind the white house.

The blatant hypocricy in his case is also harsh.

He took advantage of something as a child but would deny it to other fatherless children.

Moonhead -> RE: Paul Ryan......no answers again (11/27/2012 5:48:23 AM)

Which is a lot more germane than trying to make excuses that it's unfair to ask him about that because he didn't have his dad as a kid, I'd have thought.

Let's put it all into context -

Rep. Paul Ryan, the GOP’s most outspoken advocate for cutting and privatizing Social Security, has already benefited from Social Security himself, in the form of survivor benefits he received after his father’s untimely death.

From the age of 16, when his 55-year-old father died of a heart attack, until he was 18, Ryan received Social Security payments, which, according to a lengthy profile in WI Magazine, he put away for college. The eventual budget czar attended Miami University in Ohio to earn a B.A. in economics and political science, and landed a congressional internship as a junior.

The focus in the social entitlements cut conversation has been on seniors, but “survivor benefits,” like the payments that Ryan and his family received, and help for the disabled, account for about a third of Social Security payments.
Raw Story

I doubt Ryan talks about such cuts because he wants to deny it to other fatherless children. It's actually irrelevant that Ryan was able to take advantage as a teenager of what was offered. It appears that many would hold him to account for not being clairvoyant then as to the fiscal problems today. The left's response of "well, you got it" is childish.

Ryan understands the math, though not necessarily where a solution might be found. The problem is that there are people who ignore the math and demand what soon enough will not be capable of being done anyway.

Now Moonhead says Absolutely. If he didn't have the testicular fortitude to answer it, he doesn't even belong in the senate, never mind the white house.

Hell, he's one of the few who actually is attempting to address the problem directly unlike the silly leftists who ignore the math in favor of their pie in the sky entitlement illusion.

DomKen -> RE: Paul Ryan......no answers again (11/27/2012 6:27:25 AM)

Social Security can be made solvent indefinitely by simply lifting the cap on income taxed for it. Ryan knows this. Ryan is a hypocrite who would deny others what he used.*

*Full disclosure I received survivors benefits when my father died as well.

tazzygirl -> RE: Paul Ryan......no answers again (11/27/2012 6:27:48 AM)

What that should tell him is the problem is not in SS and that he, as a beneficiary of that program, and knowing full well the benefits it can have to a child, should ensure he finds out where the problem truly is and not penalize those who are like him.

But, once again, its the easy way to cut some spending without offending the wallets.

Indexing to longevity too though lifting the cap is not necessary.

There's nothing catastrophically wrong with SS that indexing to longevity and getting rid of the abatement would not fix. One of the biggest problems with SS is government using it as a slush fund for other purposes. I believe Ryan must know all this too, but so must too the other members of Congress.

Begs the question, why has it not / is it not being fixed? Given that it appears Congress shall not fix it, what else is there but cuts to SS? As least Ryan is admitting what has to happen given the current circumstances. Who else is even coming close to admitting anything?

*I too received survivor benefits when dad died. And here's a story behind that. I was in college and was receiving benefits. When I left college I received a SS check I should not get. I returned it to SS with a letter explaining the why of why I should not be receiving it. The next month I received another and I returned that one too. SS returned all the checks to me with a letter stating that those benefits were to be paid out to me. I called and talked with an SS rep on the phone. They were emphatic about it.

Two years later I received a letter from SS stating I was overpaid. I replied with an attached copy of their previous letter. They dropped the matter.

Perhaps mr. ryan might consider doing his fucking job...ya know sponsoring a bill that would stop the ss from being a slush fund

What is your point???That beauracracy has the ability to fuck things up?

subspaceseven -> RE: Paul Ryan......no answers again (11/28/2012 6:57:31 AM)

And SS has nothing to do with the budget, it is not in the budget, other than the fact they have borrowed from it for decades and the loans are due to be paid back

It is not an ENTITLEMENT either, it comes out of your paycheck, we pay into it, to bad the GOP can't be honest about that either.

You're such a kludge.

It amazes me how many people cringe when someone who had less...used the services that all you liberals want to preserve, and they became something better. God forbid!

Why don't you become something better? And to prove your point...use your bootstraps.

BECOME something better. Without the state!

(I'll be glad to pay for it...but....quit bitching. BECOME something better!)

DO IT!!!!!!

Quit bitching.
