The GOP is finished when Texas becomes Blue. And given that Romney LOST THE CATHOLIC VOTE, it's not too far-fetched to see a big latino registration drive combined with "The GOP is the Party of Racism" ( Given their failure to repudiate the racists and disclaim their prior adoption of Atwater's "Southern Strategy". There's NO WAY the GOP can counter that ground-game, and Narwhal exists to do *exactly that*.

For such bishops, the election came as a shock. I’m told by people who attended the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops post-election meeting this month in Baltimore that many of them had been convinced Romney would win. Yet Romney not only lost; he also narrowly lost the Catholic vote, partly because of overwhelming support for Obama among Latinos, the fastest-growing group in the church.

Seems the GOP is leaning towards a limited immigration reform.

They SHOULD BE working on (1) expelling the racists and (2) publicly disclosing and apologizing for the adoption of Atwater's racist Southern Strategy. Of course, until they do that, they're going to be controlled by the racists, and then CANNOT embrace the latinos which are going to dominate the polls in Texas next election cycle.

They're why Romney lost the catholic vote ( well, that and a lot of catholics are creeped out by mormons... ) and I don't see any way for the currently-racist-GOP to get past that without admitting their faults, and ensuring that they do not ever recur.

I am wondering what race latinos are? Is it correct to say a person in support of restricting immigration is a racist?
Both the Republicans and the Democrats are in trouble in few years as they are collectively bankrupting the country.

Sad story, Catholic Church is in trouble for many reasons. Does becoming an agent for the totalitarian government solve the problem?
"There are also influential bishops who now want to work with the Obama administration to secure a compromise on the contraception mandate under the health-care law."

Please define "Totalitarian", and explain your usage of it in this context. Please provide clear historical examples of "Totalitarian" governments.

I don't think either of the major parties is going to be disappearing for some time. Maybe the GOP has a small problem with the shifting demographic situation in this country, given their current stance on immigration. On the other hand, the viewpoints that parties espouse change. Prior to Harry Truman, the Democratic party couldn't have cared less about the plight of African-Americans. After Truman won election in his own right, there was a definite party shift, eventually leading to the advocacy of the Civil Rights Acts. Don't be surprised if the GOP softens their position while hardening up on some issues, such as taxing and spending.

Additionally, don't be surprised if, in the next few election cycles, you begin to see the GOP softening their stance on social issues such as gay marriage and abortion. Not that they're going to go all the way to the left on them, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a massive softening. It would even fit in with the current GOP philosophy: less government control. The government could get out of defining marriage, out of taking away women's choices, and so on.

This makes no sense to me fargle. The entire existence of the Republican party right now can be reduced down to "How well can they mislead people." They know that as well as we do. That's why all their thinking is around how to soften the message rather than how to change the platform. So I suspect the contest is going to be more like "Can they up their lying game?"

To be fair, I feel the same about Democrats. Both parties are wilfully deceiving us in order to pillage a nation.

Since when was that a GOP philosophy?
The last guy you had who even paid lip service to that idea was Nixon...

It's been over 30 years since that was part of their philosophy.

If they would head back that way, they could kick ass.

I'm afraid you're being optimistic, Fargle. If they lose Texas, which could also happen in Arizona and Oklahoma, then the Radicals will become a permanent minority party - but that doesn't mean they'll dry up and blow away. And if they do, it will take a lot longer than two years.

My guess is that if they lose the House in '14 and the national election in '16, which they are on track to do now, then the rot will set in, and they'll start circling the drain. But it will likely be mid-century before they are gone.

Just because they are losers doesn't mean they will up and quit. In fact, just the opposite: their present woes stem from being the party of hateful fanatics of all stripes, and fanatics do not change, and do not quit.

Speaking of which - that cheap-ass 'totalitarian' crack is just the latest hateful spew toward the President. My guess is this will be the theme for the next two years at least. Now if Fellow wants references to Totalitarian governments, I would offer -

North Korea
Burma
Iraq
Iran (Saddam)
Afghanistan (Taliban)
Maoist China
Soviet Russia
Nazi Germany
Fascist Italy
Imperial Japan
The Second Reich (the Kaiser)
Imperial Russia (the Czars)
Napoleonic France
The Antebellum South (slavery)
The Catholic Church
The whole darn Middle Ages...
